About our group and team
Learning Support is a critical part Te Tai Runga in the Ministry. We are charged with leading the education sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education.
Our Learning Support Specialists work closely with families, wh?nau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and M?ori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning results and promote social inclusion.
An opportunity exists for a Special Education Adviser to join our team located in Dunedin. This is a permanent part-time position for 26.6 hours per week (.7 FTE). This position also requires the prosperous candidate to work as an Adviser on Deaf Children for 11.4 hours per week (.3 FTE) for a fixed term period ending 23 December 2022. However, the exact composition of the position will be negotiated with the prosperous candidate. The prosperous candidate may also be required to provide services across Otago/Southland.
The prosperous applicant will:
   » have demonstrable knowledge, practice and expertise in supporting children and young people with severe and challenging behaviours and students with severe disabilities
   » be responsible for providing a range of assessment and intervention services to children as well as establishing effective relationships with parents, families, wh?nau, educators and others working in the community
   » have significant special education qualifications and/or a Master of Special Education (Sensory Disabilities/Hearing Impairment) or a Diploma of Adviser on Deaf and Hearing-Impaired Children
   » have a current driver’s licence
   » have a current My Vaccine Pass
candidates for the position should be able to demonstrate the following key attributes:
   » capability to plan and manage time effectively to meet goals and objectives
   » Knowledge of the curriculum in schools
   » Knowledge and knowledge of inclusive education practices
   » capability and availability to work co-operatively as a team member in a range of contexts
   » Excellent interpersonal and communication expertise
   » Sensitivity to cultural and ethnic diversity and commitment to the principles of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi
