The centre
Genomics Aotearoa is an alliance of nine partners – New Zealand universities and Crown Research Institutes – hosted by the University of Otago. Our aim is to develop new genomics and bioinformatics tools and techniques in New Zealand, and to lift the genomics capcapability of researchers and practitioners, especially those working in the fields of human health, the environment and primary production. Our work is to garner knowledge in this exciting and fast-moving field of science and share that for the benefit of all New Zealanders.
Te Ao M?ori is at the centre of Genomics Aotearoa activities, including development of an Indigenous Genomics Platform which embeds M?ori management of indigenous genomics research practice and data. We will deliver to the goals of Vision M?tauranga, benefiting M?ori through improved delivery of indigenous innovation, taiao, hauora and m?tauranga, including through research projects and resource development undertaken by and for M?ori.
The function
We seek a Vision M?tauranga Manager to work within the developing Indigenous Genomics Platform to help deliver these goals. You will be part of the team that enables opportunities for M?ori in genomic science and gives M?ori stakeholders a voice within our nationwide platform.
Under the guidance of the lead researcher of the Indigenous Genomics Platform and the Director of GA, you will:
   » Provide strategic advice to Genomics Aotearoa Projects.
   » Maintain oversight of M?ori led/M?ori co-led projects.
   » Provide written reviews of proposed research projects from a Te Ao M?ori perspective, to be presented to our Governance Board.
   » Deliver training sessions in tikanga and other aspects of Te Ao M?ori to build capacity and capcapability in Te Ao M?ori.
   » Support M?ori researcher capacity and capcapability building.
   » Use your networks and relationships to build lasting relationships with hapu, iwi and other M?ori communities.
   » Work to ensure that research findings and tools are disseminated to M?ori communities in a culturally appropriate manner.
   » Contribute to policy development in the following areas:
   » Assist in the development of a Consultation Framework,
   » Assist in the development of the Indigenous Data Repository,
   » Assist in the development of a Cultural Competency Framework, and
   » Assist in the development of Guidelines for Genomic Research with Taonga Species.
Your expertise and practice
The prosperous candidate will have:
   » A science or similar bachelor’s degree, with significant knowledge in the New Zealand science research context (and a significant postgraduate qualification is desirable).
   » A sound knowledge of M?tauranga M?ori, the Treaty of Waitangi, M?ori research methodologies and tikanga (and Te Reo capability is highly desirable, or availability to learn).
   » The capability to engage effectively with the M?ori research community and to communicate research findings in a culturally appropriate manner.
   » The capability to network, and to work effectively as a member of a team and independently.
   » Ideally also project management, relationship management and communications expertise.
Further details
This is a full-time, fixed-term position for three years. For the right candidate we can offer flexible or part time working conditions and if preferred, the position can be undertaken from anywhere in New Zealand. The University can also offer appropriate training to support success in this cutting-edge function.
