Samoa House Library (SHL) is seeking a Subject Librarian for a fixed term from March 2021 to February 2022. Since its inception, SHL has operated entirely on the basis of voluntary labour. We are excited to be able to offer this paid function to someone who will become integral to the maintenance, development, and direction of SHL as a communal place of research and learning. In this function you will work with the SHL organising group to; welcome and support visitors with research, lending, and general enquiries; maintain and grow the library catalogue through acquisitions and commissioning texts; develop public education programmes; begin initiatives within the library and it's collections; collaborate with and support other practitioners, groups, or institutions.
This opportunity is open to art or art-related practitioners at any career stage. Ideally, you will have an interest in artistic research, as well as be engaged with the wider arts community. This newly-created function entails a range of responsibilities, so initiative, flexibility, and communication expertise will be essential. A expertise of archival or library practices, past leadership abilities practice, as well as administrative expertise, will also be beneficial. Training and mentorship will be provided by the SHL organisers as well as practitioners outside of our team.
This is a fixed term, part-time opportunity working 25 hours per week on a variable schedule at a rate of $32.00 per hour. You will have a high level of autonomy in prioritising and allocating your work hours between general library care and project development. You will work closely with the board, including attending fortnightly board meetings.
SHL is an independent library and alternative education platform. In our two years of operation, we have opened a public space for research and critical discussion, established a collection and archive from public donations, run a calendar of public programming (including our open programme curriculum), and supported and collaborated with practitioners and arts organisations both locally and internationally.
More information about the library is available on our website www.samoahouselibrary.org
