DEPARTMENT of HUMAN NUTRITION – TE TARI KAI T?TIKA TAKATA
The Department of Human Nutrition at the University of Otago is the longest established department of its kind at a New Zealand University. The Department supports BSc, MSc, MAppSc, and PhD students. Our teaching addresses research frontiers alongside real-world challenges, and our graduates are knowledgeable about the important place of nutrition in achieving social equity and supporting the wellbeing of individuals and communities.
The Department has a long-standing commitment to research and teaching on the impact human nutrition has on the health and wellbeing for individuals and communities, regionally, nationally, and internationally. We aim to connect issues specific to Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific region with themes in the international, professional and research discourse.
Research in the Department applies diverse methodologies, and our teaching is informed by both professional practice and the high-quality research undertaken by our academic staff.
Our skills includes:
   » knowledge nutritional status and its impact on public health and wellbeing, with a focus on developing local and global food systems that are sustainable and accessible to everyone.
   » knowledge how the digestion and metabolism of foods, dietary patterns, and nutrients, influence physiological processes, and improve human health and performance.
   » developing, evaluating, and implementing nutrition strategies and interventions, that prevent and/or minimise disease and therefore, improve the health and wellbeing of individuals, wh?nau, and communities.
The function – Te mahi
We are pursuing to appoint a full-time, permanent (confirmation path) position as Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Human Nutrition. We welcome candidates with skills across the breadth of Human Nutrition including candidates with skills in any of the following: M?ori health, micronutrients, working with older populations, clinical nutrition and whose work connects with diverse Aotearoa New Zealand communities.
In this function you will contribute to:
   » teaching across our undergraduate and post-graduate curriculums in Human Nutrition, including developing course content and teaching materials, participating in collaborative teaching activities, and assessing student performance.
   » research activities within the Department, including obtaining internal and external research funding, supervising research students, and communicating your research, for example, in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.
   » a collegial, collaborative and cooperative teaching and research environment, within the department, University, and wider community.

   » PhD (or equivalent) in Human Nutrition.
   » Excellent research record relative to opportunity.
   » practice in or potential for collaborative, interdisciplinary and innovative research.

Human Nutrition at Otago
The Department of Human Nutrition currently consists of a team of eight research active academics and eight professional practice and teaching fellows. Research areas range from the metabolism of individual nutrients to food waste. Teaching speciality areas include nutritional assessment, public health and sports nutrition. The Department of Human Nutrition is the first to offer a Master of Applied Science in Advanced Nutrition Practice, that provides practical real world practice. The Department also provides post-graduate distance study in Human Nutrition, for working professionals.

There is one full-time (1.0 FTE), permanent position available, located in Dunedin. This is a confirmation path function, equivalent to the North American tenure-track.
The appointment start date has some flexibility. We anticipate that the prosperous applicant will be able to start in late 2023/early 2024; however, please indicate your availcapability in your cover letter.
The income for this vacancy will range from Lecturer: $90,902- $107,300 to Senior Lecturer: $112,482 – $138,182 per annum.
