Hocken Collections is one of Aotearoa New Zealand's leading research libraries with documentary heritage collections of national significance. We support the teaching, learning, and research needs of academics and students from the University of Otago, Otago Polytechnic as well as other academic, professional, and independent researchers who value the diverse nature and accessibility of our collections.
The function - Te mahi
The Head Curator M?ori leads the preservation, protection, development, and accessibility of taonga in the Hocken Collections and the wider University of Otago Library Collections. The function is responsible for delivering a range of services from both the Hocken Collections and the wider University Library collections in support of the teaching, learning and research goals of M?ori within the University and the research interests of the wider M?ori community.
Key responsibilities for this function:
   » Build cultural skills and expertise all over the Hocken Collections and ensure capcapability and capacity for m?tauranga M?ori is embedded across the library.
   » Ensure Otago University's M?ori staff and academics are supported to carry out in depth research on the collections.
   » Develop and coordinate services and programmes at Hocken Collections to support the research and information needs of University of Otago M?ori students, staff and academics, iwi and M?ori communities.
   » Develop, research and promote collections of interest to M?ori researchers and ensure they are appropriately described and accessible.
   » Contribute to the effective implementation of the University of Otago's M?ori Strategic Framework as Information technology relates to the University of Otago Library and Hocken Collections.

prosperous candidates will have:
   » A significant degree in Library, Archives, Museum Studies, M?ori Studies, or a related discipline.
   » expertise of m?tauranga M?ori as Information technology applies to cultural heritage collections and their significance as taonga.
   » A high level of cultural competence in engaging within M?ori communities.
   » practice with a range of digital technologies used for the provision of access to the collections.
   » expertise of archival and library practices and standards with regards taonga M?ori.
   » A commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
   » Working expertise of te reo M?ori and tikanga M?ori.
   » Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills.

This is a full-time (37.5 hours), permanent position reporting to the Hocken Librarian. You will work standard business hours, though you will need to be available for weekend talks, evening events and projects as required from time to time.
