The function
As Director of the University Research Office, this is a hugely exciting opportunity to bring your relational leadership abilities and research systems skills to play a major function in the next steps of delivering on our aspirations to grow the quality of our research, extend the proportion of academic staff engaged in research, and grow our external research salary. This appointment will provide professional leadership abilities to ensure progression towards, and attainment of, key goals relating to the University’s mission to promote excellent research that inspires curiosity, advances knowledge and benefits communities.
One key outcome for theAUT Research Officeis to build our external research revenue in the short, medium and long term from government funders, industry and international funders. To achieve our ambition requires careful planning, action and investment that steps us from where we At Presentare, to where we want to be, and you will have an opportunity to co-design these actions with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research (DVC-R, academic leader of AUT’s research) and the university’s senior executive.
The function will have oversight of critical portfolios with an emphasis on supporting our faculties in developing research and researchers, and leading our research management, research performance and future-focused planning.
You will:
   » join a well-established team of highly practiced research management staff who are looking forward to welcoming an authentic and relationship-focussed leader to advance the work of the team and the success of research at AUT. You will lead a team of up to 10 committed and hard-working direct (and indirect) reports.
   » join the University at a time with significant opportunity to influence our future with a more connected research system with both the Ethics office (AUTEC) and the Graduate Research School joining the DVC-R portfolio (the AUT Research Office Director function is not responsible for these areas but will work closely alongside with them).
   » have the support of a highly functional and connected group of associate deans of research in our faculties who are on board for the goals of the research plan, the need for connection and collaboration, transparency and a strong interface between the central Research Office and faculties.
   » be able to draw on the findings and recommendations of a current cross-university working group established by the DVC-R to explore capcapability and/or capacity gaps in our research ecosystem with some investment being ring-fenced to deliver on those priorities in 2022.
   » identify and support opportunities for partnership between the AUT Research Office and faculty staff in professional domains and academic

What kind of person are we looking for?
We ask you to bring sound leadership abilities and management skills, at all times a focus on principled behaviour, clarity and transparency, and ensuring the most simple and transparent processes possible are in place to achieve the research results we aspire to. You will bring a fiscally astute approach to managing priorities within the tertiary context that you will understand and have practice of managing. A constant quality improvement mindset is key.

   » A strong knowledge and practice of, and passion for, research management within the tertiary sector in New Zealand.
   » A proven record of capcapability and skills in fostering, partnering and contracting for research success, performance/system evaluation.
   » Comprehensive people leadership abilities practice, including managing staff and developing a team.
   » A highly principled approach to relationship building, problem solving, goal prioritisation and goal attainment, and transparency in decision making.
   » Sound fiscal knowledge and budget management capcapability.
   » A sound knowledge of Te Tiriti and M?tauranga M?ori.
   » A postgraduate research or other directly significant degree, or equivalent. A doctorate is desirable but not essential.
