M? te t?ma – About our team
The Department of Botany at Otago is the only university department in New Zealand specialising in the science of plants, in fact one of only a few in Australasia. We are a research active department, and our staff teach into a wide variety of degree majors, including Botany, Ecology, Genetics, Plant Biotechnology, Agricultural Innovation, Marine Science and Oceanography.
The University of Otago welcomes, supports, and celebrates M?ori and Pasifika staff and students. The Office of M?ori Development provides guardianship over M?ori matters at an organisation-wide level. The University has a M?ori Staff Caucus known as Te Poutama M?ori, a Pacific Academic Staff Caucus, a M?ori student centre known as Te Huka M?tauraka and a Pacific Islands student support centre. Each division of the University has an Associate Dean (M?ori) and networks of staff supporting M?ori and Pasifika students.
The Department of Botany is committed to affording students the opportunity to engage with expertise of plants from a M?ori world view, and to strengthening it’s curriculum and research in relation to kaupapa M?ori, m?tauranga M?ori, commitment to Te Tiriti o W?itangi, the University of Otago M?ori Strategic Framework (MSF) and Pacific Strategic Framework (PSF).
Te mahi – The function
Applications are invited for the position of P?kenga/Lecturer in Botany.
The position affords the opportunity for interested scholars to teach and conduct research in a manner that is transformative and beneficial to M?ori or Pacifica. candidates are encouraged to identify the manner in which they will complement existing strengths in the Department and develop new and innovative directions in research and teaching.
Applications from candidates with a background in any aspect of plant ecology or ethnobotany are strongly encouraged.
Through this appointment we intend to further enable the Department of Botany to strengthen its engagement and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the University of Otago’s MSF and PSF. The prosperous candidate will be an important part of our future plan to grow M?ori and Pacifica academics within the Department.

The prosperous candidate must have:
   » A PhD with a research focus in an area of botany, ethnobotany or plant ecology.
   » Demonstrated capability and passion for delivering high-quality teaching that will support and enhance the Department’s degree programme.
   » capability to establish, develop and maintain an independent and on-going research programme with funding success.
In addition, Information technology will be desirable for the prosperous candidate to have:
   » Familiarity with M?ori or Pasifika concepts, values, ideas, and practices as they relate to research and teaching in Botany and ecology.
   » Established, or commitment to developing, relationships with national and local iwi and r?naka.
   » Commitment to upholding values, tikanga, kawa and traditions as guided by Ng?i Tahu, who hold mana whenua in the region.

P?roko – Further details
This is a full-time, confirmation-path (tenure track) position at the level of Lecturer (equivalent to adjunct Professor in the North American system). However, a part-time or job-sharing position could be considered for the right candidate(s).
The prosperous candidate is expected to take up tasks by 13 February 2023.
