Ara Poutama Aotearoa (Department of Corrections) Health Services lead the delivery of patient-focused health care services to tangata within corrections facilities across Aotearoa. H?kai Rangi, our over-arching strategic direction, places the focus on health at the heart of our business.

As part of Ara Poutama’s commitment to transformational change We are pursuing to increase our number ofKairuruku Hinengaro – M?ori Mental Health Practitioners by joining our mental health team’s, located across the motu:
   » Auckland Prison
   » Mt Eden Correction Facility
   » Auckland Region Women’s Correction Facility
   » Spring Hill Correction Facility,
   » Rimutaka Prison and
   » Christchurch Men’s Prison
As a Kairuruku Hinengaro- M?ori Mental Health Practitioner, you play a pivotal function working in partnership with the Intervention and Support Practice team, who are dedicated to providing high quality mental health support and treatment to the most vulnerable tangata in our care. Your function as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team will be to provide cultural support services to enhance the mental health and wellbeing of tangata in our care.
Key components of the function will be assessing the ?oranga? needs of those in our care from a whakapapa, hinengaro, wairua, well-being perspective. Effective caseload management, cultural triage, assessment and evidence informed treatments that align to mana whenua best practice. Providing cultural support, advise and coordination of M?ori initiative and operations to enhance the well-being of tangata in our care.
This opportunity will suit aKairuruku Hinengaro – M?ori Mental Health Practitionerwho demonstrates a strong commitment to mentoring culturally safe practice and partnership.Utilising expertise of te reo me ona tikanga, m?tauranga M?ori and rongo M?ori to enhance the effectiveness of services provided to tangata in our care. Our teams are committed to modelling expert practice and ensure a strong focus on the principles of H?kai rangi, Humanising and Healing – respecting the human dignity and inherent mana of all tangata in our care, and their wh?nau. You will receive support and guidance from our nationwide network of Kairuruku Hinengaro.

   » practice and knowledge in te reo M?ori me ?na tikanga
   » Grounded knowledge of m?tauranga M?ori
   » An in-depth knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how Information technology relates to health well-being and equity
   » An knowledge of the impact of colonisation on health and wellbeing
   » Knowledge of indigenous methodologies and health models
   » practice of working effectively within a kaupapa M?ori environment, and commitment to on-going personal development in this area
   » Broad knowledge of mental health within a holistic view
   » practice of working with people presenting with acute and complex mental health and/or addiction issues
   » An knowledge of trauma informed care and practice in working with people who have practiced complex trauma
   » Effective facilitation and negotiation expertise in an individual or group setting
   » A working knowledge of the Mental Health Act
   » Knowledge of the National Mental Health Sector Standards
   » Excellent verbal and written communication expertise, including the capability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical members
   » capability to handle sensitive information in strict confidence.
Qualifications
   » A significant tertiary qualification is preferred
   » L4 or above Mental Health or Community Support qualification
