DIVISION of HUMANITIES
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Division of Humanities invites applications for the position of Dean of Te Tumu: School of M?ori, Pacific and Indigenous Studies.
Established in 1869, the University of Otago is New Zealand’s first university and is home to over 20,000 students. Te Tumu is a progressive School at the University of Otago that has been offering a major in M?ori Studies since 1990. Over the last decade the School has expanded its curriculum to include majors in Pacific Islands Studies and He Kura Matanui/Indigenous Development, and a coursework Master of Indigenous Studies (MIndS) degree.
The function
The Dean reports directly to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Division of Humanities, and provides leadership abilities in a collaborative academic environment, while advancing the School’s commitment to excellence in research-led teaching and the provision of an enriching student practice. As a member of the Division’s leadership abilities team, the Dean also contributes to the Division’s strategy and the wider University.
We welcome applications from suitably-qualified candidates who will be appointed at a level on the University of Otago academic scale that is commensurate with their academic achievement, skills and practice.
this function will build on Te Tumu’s position as a leading international and national contributor to research and teaching in M?ori, Pacific and Indigenous Studies. They will take responsibility for leading and developing Te Tumu by fostering collegiality and indigenous cultural values that respect the mana of persons within Te Tumu and the wider University.
The prosperous candidate will also teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, foster postgraduate research at Masters and PhD level and pursue original research in the area of their speciality.
Skills and practice
To be considered for appointment to this position, candidates should be able to demonstrate the following:
   » A distinguished record of research publication in an area significant to M?ori, Pacific and/or Indigenous Studies.
   » practice of teaching in an area of M?ori, Pacific and/or Indigenous Studies in a tertiary setting.
   » practice of supervising postgraduate research students.
   » Evidence of national and/or international standing in the applicant’s field of particular skills.
   » practice of management in an Indigenous tertiary setting.
Strong candidates for the position will also have a demonstrated record of academic leadership abilities, display strong interpersonal skills, a genuine interest in others, an open communication style, clear decision-making capability and a collegial leadership abilities style.
