Who we are
The Division of Sciences is one of the four teaching divisions in the University, the others being Health Sciences, Commerce, and Humanities. The Division of Sciences represents a broad range of disciplines in 15 Departments and a number of inter-disciplinary programmes.
The Department of Zoology has a strong reputation in whole-organism biology, with research strengths that include neurobiology, animal behaviour, conservation biology, genetics, evolutionary biology, parasitology, environmental physiology and wildlife management. We have links to the Department of Botany, the Department of Marine Science, the Ecology, the Neuroscience, the Genetics Programmes, and other centres at the University of Otago, providing a collaborative environment and resources for innovative interdisciplinary research.
Our staff have international reputations in their areas of skills and make major contributions to answering fundamental questions in basic and applied research.
The Department of Zoology is committed to affording students the opportunity to engage with expertise of animals from a M?ori world view, and to strengthening its curriculum and research in relation to kaupapa M?ori and m?tauranga M?ori, the University of Otago M?ori Strategic Framework, and the Treaty of Waitangi.
The function
Applications are invited for the position of Lecturer in Evolutionary Biology (Bioinformatics).
We are pursuing a person with a significant doctorate, and demonstrated potential to develop as an outstanding researcher and teacher in evolutionary bioinformatics in the Department of Zoology. The position affords an exciting opportunity for an emerging scholar to research and teach in a vibrant and diverse Department. The prosperous candidate will develop a transformative and collaborative research program, supporting the university’s commitment to excellence in research.
Your skills and practice
   » A PhD with a background in analysis of high-throughput sequencing data and evolutionary biology.
   » expertise of and familiarity with a range of bioinformatics skills, concepts, and practices as they relate to the biology of animals, including genomic, transcriptomic and metabarcoding data analyses.
   » A strong interest, and practice, in research and teaching of bioinformatics and evolutionary genomics.
   » An capability to contribute to teaching and learning environments that support engagement of students and staff with bioinformatics and genomics.
   » Be committed to and or have established connections or track record of working with national and local bioinformaticians.
   » Be committed to being a productive collaborator with a track record of working collegially.

This is a confirmation-path (tenure track) position at the level of Lecturer. The prosperous candidate is expected to take up tasks by 1 July 2021.
