Tenei te mahi o te kaiaarahi. (The kaka chatters, the tui challenges and the kereru pacifies. This is the work of the facilitator. Our Programme Facilitators work with men, women and youth in prison and in the community, helping them to understand and address the causes of their offending to assist them to create crime-free futures. They do this through delivering a range of culturally and clinically designed therapeutic programmes, either individually or with a co-facilitator. Programme Facilitators come from different backgrounds, cultures, education and practice - but they all share the capability to motivate and work alongside others to support them to make positive changes in their lives. Who does well as a Programme Facilitator? To be prosperous in this function, you will be someone who enjoys working with people and want to help them gain insight into their harmful behaviours. You will be comfortable walking alongside people on their journey. Information technology is a function for someone who wants to facilitate change through questioning and guiding. This is not a function for someone who just wants to direct, instruct, or teach people. Needless to say, you’ll also be an excellent listener. It would be valuable if you have an knowledge of Te Ao Maori worldview, individual and group behaviour, and / or significant tertiary education in psychology, social work, counselling or a related area. We are pursuing people who: » Are effective listeners and communicators and who have the capability to build strong positive relationships with participants and other stakeholders » Ideally have practice in delivering and facilitating therapeutic interventions, either individual or, ideally, group therapy » Have life practice that means you can work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and ethnic groups » Have knowledge, or are willing to lgain about Maori culture, protocols and peoples and apply kaupapa Maori practice in your work » Are comfortable having their practice viewed and receptive in receiving and utilising regular feedback on their practice » Have practice with report writing Why the Department of Corrections? We can offer you the opportunity to be part of a supportive, specialist team who work in our unique environment. As a member of our team, your continuing development is important and we will provide you with support including clinical and cultural supervision to grow your therapeutic facilitation expertise. We will give you full training in facilitation expertise, cognitive-located therapeutic programme principles and delivery and the support you need to be part of a team working to make communities safer. You will need to have a full New Zealand Drivers Licence, as travelling is required at times within the district.
