Applications are invited from a suitably qualified and practiced Advisor on Deaf Children to join our Hawke’s Bay/Tair?whiti team, providing services to deaf and hard of hearing children and their families. This is a permanent part-time position located in our Gisborne office.
As an Adviser on Deaf Children you will play a critical function in our region’s Learning Support team by:
   » providing specialist support to babies and children who are deaf or hard of hearing
   » providing professional support and guidance to schools, teachers and families and building the capacity of those who are best placed to support the learning of these babies and children
   » working as part of a trans-disciplinary team where a child’s needs are complex.
To be prosperous you will need as follows:
   » A Master of Special Education (Sensory Disabilities/Hearing Impairment) or a Diploma of Adviser on Deaf and Hearing-Impaired Children. Please note, if you do not have either of these qualifications but you have a Resource Teacher of the Deaf or Speech Language Therapist or equivalent qualification we can consider you but you will be required to complete the Master of Masters of Specialist Teaching (Adviser on Deaf Children) within four years of appointment. If required, a study award (covering tuition fees, travel, a contribution to accommodation and time off to study) for this may be available through the Ministry. candidates must be a NZ Citizen to be eligible for the study award
   » expertise and practice in language, communication and child development and in the educational and audiological management for children who are deaf or hard of hearing
   » practice and expertise of New Zealand Sign Language or a commitment to learning New Zealand Sign Language
   » Excellent communication and interpersonal expertise and an capability to work effectively with children, young people and their families and teachers across a diverse range of settings
   » The capability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangata whenuatanga
candidates must have a current driver’s licence as travel will be required.
