Our department has a strong reputation for quality teaching in a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes including science, biomedical science, medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, medical laboratory sciences, and physical education.
We have a strong research culture, and a firm commitment to adding value through collaborative research, both within and outside the department.
The University of Otago welcomes, supports, and celebrates M?ori staff and students. Each division of the University has an Associate Dean M?ori; the School of Biomedical Sciences has a M?ori Strategic Framework Facilitator, Rautaki Hononga/Kaitakawaenga; and M?ori students within the Department of Physiology are supported by Kai?whina M?ori with input from academic staff members.
The function –Te mahi
The Department of Physiology is seeking to appoint an emerging scholar to pursue and engage in new opportunities to research and teach from a kaupapa M?ori perspective, and to conduct research that is transformative and beneficial for M?ori communities.
Through this appointment we intend to further enable the Department of Physiology and the School of Biomedical Sciences to strengthen its engagement and commitment to Te Tiriti ? Waitangi and the University of Otago’s M?ori Strategic Framework.
In this function you will show (one or more of the following):
   » Familiarity with M?ori beliefs, values, ideas, and practices as they relate to research and teaching in Physiology and general Biomedical Sciences.
   » Interest, and preferably practice, in research and teaching from a kaupapa M?ori and m?tauranga M?ori perspective.
   » An capability to contribute to teaching and learning environments that support engagement of students and staff with te ao M?ori, te reo M?ori and m?tauranga M?ori.
   » Established, or commitment to developing, relationships with national and local iwi and r?naka.
   » Commitment to upholding values, tikanga, kawa and traditions as guided by Ng?i Tahu, who hold mana whenua in the region.
In this function you will:
   » Develop and maintain a strong independent research programme with funding success.
   » Actively contribute to teaching, assessment and course development in the undergraduate programme, and to postgraduate student teaching and project supervision.
   » Participate in service within the Department, the School of Biomedical Sciences, the University and the wider community as appropriate.
   » Be encouraged to engage with or develop research that is of relevance to M?ori and that supports the University of Otago’s M?ori Strategic Framework.

The prosperous candidate will be expected to:
   » Hold a PhD, MB ChB (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery), M.D. (Doctor of Medicine), or equivalent higher research/academic qualification.
   » Be skilled and enthusiastic in passing on your expertise to a range of audiences.
   » Have proven research capability that aligns with the Department’s current research programmes.
   » Have an on-going and active independent research programme with funding success.
   » Have effective communication and relationship management expertise.
   » Provide evidence of an capability to work well with students and staff from differing academic and cultural backgrounds.
   » Have a proven capability to provide mentorship to students and staff of the Department.
