The Govett Brewster Art Gallery - Len Lye Centre is a bold and contemporary art centre connecting people, communities and cultures, and encouraging critical dialogue about the world we live in. Working with our M?ori partner group Whiringa Toi we aim to ensure our activities represents the stories of our place in the Pacific, Tangata Whenua of Taranaki, and people of Aotearoa and of the world.
We have a great opportunity for an adjunct Curator, Contemporary M?ori Art to join a collaborative, supportive programming team working in a dynamic gallery environment. Reporting to the Director, and working closely with external M?ori curators with the support of Whiringa Toi, this function will assist with the development and delivery of exhibitions, publications and public programmes for the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery.
Valuing creativity, honouring M?ori arts and artists and growing genuine partnerships with tangata whenua are values which underpin the work we do. You will bring sound expertise and best practice to the research and interpretation of contemporary M?ori art to support prosperous exhibition development. As kaitiaki to the collection works, you will support the care and interpretation of artworks and artists' ideas, and work closely with living artists. You will also actively contribute to public programme planning. Supporting this mahi, will be your good communication expertise, capability to professionally interact with a diverse range of people and communities, and manage a wide variety of projects.
To be prosperous in this function, you will have practice in working with contemporary artists, expertise of contemporary M?ori art, some practice in art exhibition development and a significant tertiary qualification. You will enjoy being part of a multi-disciplinary team and bring strong organisational expertise and research, writing and public speaking capabilities. A level of fluency in te reo M?ori and expertise of tikanga o Taranaki are highly desirable.
At New Plymouth District Council we aim to create and sustain a compensateing workplace environment for our staff. You can expect to start in this 12 month fixed-term, full-time function with us between $59,047 and $64,182.
