Job description:

Job Description

Over the last couple of years mana whenua, Maori and the council have collectively developed the Tupiki Ora Maori strategy and together we are committed to nurturing the well-being of our community. Embedded within Mataaho Aronui, this position offers you the opportunity to join us to realise our vision to see everyone in our city thrive, and to create the future for our mokopuna.
We have created new opportunities within the council so together we move forward in the way intended with our Takai Here Partnership Agreement and now is the time for you to join us.
No te rangatairunga – Your leader
Karepa Wall our Tatai Heke Maori Chief Maori agent, leads Mataaho Aronui with a communal sense of belonging, engagement, where you can innovate, and create within an authentic group who will make a tangible difference for the community. He is all about ‘weaving indigenous knowledge and systems together with modern practices for amazing results’.
Karepa enjoys spending time with those who see value in connecting on another level, outside of normal workday interactions. Karepa plays several musical instruments, and he also wears the most incredible shoes!
Te turanga – The function
Reporting into Amotaketake – Manager Office of the Chief Maori agent, as Pou Tikanga, you’ll lead the organisation in upholding tikanga Maori. The function will be diverse in that one day you will be blessing a new community park, to opening citizen ceremonies, to supporting the Mayor to a powhiri at the marae, to running powhiri in the office, to undertaking tikanga in our community housing or infrastructure projects. No two days will be the same!
You’ll provide expert leadership abilities and advice to develop, implement and refine tikanga best practice standards and strategies. You’ll really help us to lift the tikanga capcapability of all staff and offer your skills to help us prioritise and formulate a realistic plan to make Information technology happen.
You’ll work in a range of settings including providing advice to council and supporting our internal teams to work safely within te ao Maori.
Mou ake – You
We need someone who can bring a thorough knowledge of what tikanga means in different contexts, specifically as a Council with so many functions. We want a natural leader who has passion for what they’re doing and knows how to build trusting relationships from the get-go.
You be able to naturally guide the way relationships are formed, provide ways for groups to interact, and even guide the way people identify themselves. Tikanga comes in many forms, and we want to weave Information technology all over our organisation in an authentic and appropriate way.
You’ll ideally bring existing iwi relationships and a tertiary qualification in matauranga Maori, equivalent practice within te ao Maori or practice delivering tikanga within an organisation. Endorsement from mana whenua for your application is desirable to confirm your knowledge of the tikanga needed to embed here at WCC.
We want to hear from those who are genuinely invested in the success of Mataaho Aronui and want to work collectively to make an impactful change for our community.
If you want to know more about the function, team or mahi, contact storm.shakeshaft@wcc.govt.nz
We want to make sure any accessibility requirements you may have, are well supported so the selection process is equitable for everyone.
