We are pursuing to appoint a dynamic teacher and researcher with energy and vision to pursue and engage in new opportunities that contribute to teaching and research in the Department of Botany. The position affords the opportunity for interested scholars to teach and conduct research in a manner that is transformative and beneficial to M?ori or Pacifica. candidates are encouraged to identify the manner in which they will complement existing strengths in the Department and develop new and innovative directions in research and teaching. Through this appointment we intend to further enable the Department of Botany to strengthen its engagement and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the University of Otago’s MSF and PSF. M? te tari – About the department The Division of Sciences is one of the four teaching divisions in the University, the others being Health Sciences, Commerce, and Humanities. The Division of Sciences represents a broad range of disciplines in 15 Departments and a number of inter-disciplinary programmes. We are pursuing to appoint an outstanding P?kenga to join the Department of Botany at the University of Otago located in ?tepoti Dunedin, Te Wai Pounamu South Island. We are the only Department of Botany in Aotearoa New Zealand and have a long history, being the first Department of Botany to be formed in this country. Staff in the Department of Botany teach into a wide variety of degree majors, including Botany, Ecology, Genetics, Plant Biotechnology, Agricultural Innovation, Marine Science and Oceanography. The Department of Botany is a research-active Department, with programmes spanning ecosystem science, plant functional biology, cell and molecular biology and taxonomy, with a strong emphasis on the ecology and evolution of New Zealand flora*, ecosystem processes and services, environmental change and resilience, physiological processes and plant-human interactions, including food (*’flora’ defined broadly to include terrestrial and aquatic vascular and non-vascular plants, fungi, algae, cyanobacteria and plant viruses). The Department of Botany has a range of technical and analytical equipment, greenhouses, laboratory and field work facilities. We also have access to other university facilities, for example, the Otago Genomics Facility, and the Portobello Marine Laboratory and its connected research facilities, including a research vessel, which are located on Otago Harbour within the City and administered by the Department of Marine Science. The University of Otago welcomes, supports and celebrates M?ori and Pasifika staff and students. The Office of M?ori Development provides guardianship over M?ori matters at an organisation-wide level. The University has a M?ori Staff Caucus known as Te Poutama M?ori, a Pacific Academic Staff Caucus, a M?ori student centre known as Te Huka M?tauraka and a Pacific Islands student support centre. Each division of the University has an Associate Dean (M?ori) and networks of staff supporting M?ori and Pasifika students. The Department of Botany is committed to affording students the opportunity to engage with expertise of plants from a M?ori world view, and to strengthening its curriculum and research in relation to kaupapa M?ori, m?tauranga M?ori, commitment to Te Tiriti o W?itangi, the University of Otago M?ori Strategic Framework and Pacific Strategic Framework. P?roko – Further details This is a full-time (1.0), confirmation-path (tenure track) position at the level of Lecturer (equivalent to adjunct Professor in the North American system). However, a part-time or job-sharing position could be considered for the right candidate(s).
