Do you want to help young people find a direction in life outside the justice system?
We are seeking for a positive function model to provide support, aroha and maintain a safe environment for our young people to achieve better results.
About us
At Oranga Tamariki – Ministry for Children we put rangatahi first. Putting young people first under-pins everything we do. We work with wh?nau and communities to help protect, support and care for tamariki and rangatahi. It’s a challenging job, and we are passionate about it.
About the function
As a Youth Worker, you will work directly with our young people to develop and deliver activities and programmes that give them opportunities to create and work towards positive goals. You’ll be a champion for them, helping them recognise and realise their own potential, and give them hope to turn their lives around.
If you genuinely care about providing young people with direction and hope, and giving them something to aspire to, you’ll get immense satisfaction from this function. Putting young people first, recognising their potential, and helping them break the cycle benefits not just them, but all Kiwis.
About you
You will need to be a realistic and resilient person to succeed in this function. These are young people who have practiced significant and serious challenges, and have often been in the Youth Justice system for some time. Our Residential Youth Workers and facility staff are potentially the first who genuinely care about them, and you will need to treat them with empathy, tolerance, consistency and knowledge to build a positive relationship.
Our ideal candidate, will have the following:
   » Great engagement expertise to overcome barriers
   » practice with conflict resolution
   » Cultural consciousness particularly around M?ori and Pacifica communities
   » capability to establish relationships with people from all walks of life
   » Good computer expertise, particularly with MS Office Software, report writing is part of this function
   » A current, and full driver’s licence and capability to work some weekend hours
   » practice in social services or working with at-risk youth is ideal, however candidates with transferrable life expertise are encouraged to apply
   » capability to be flexible with working hours
