Shepherdess are embarking on a digital journalism project that will tackle the social and cultural issues of significance to women in rural and regional Aotearoa. It's a pretty big project and we're really excited about it!
We are pursuing an practiced CommissioningEditor tolead the production of stories in our digital journalism project - from the research and planning phase through to publishing on our digital platforms - ensuring the robust editorial quality ofShepherdessstories all over.
You will bring your excellent writing and editing expertise, sense for what makes a good story from your time working in the media, and yourknowledge and passion for rural New Zealand to ensure a strong editorial foundation forShepherdess'sdigital channels. We would love Information technology if you also brought an knowledge of te ao M?ori.
You will have an attention to detail, be organised and able to meet deadlines. You will be involved in research and planning stories; working with talent; briefing writers and photographers; working with our freelance writers, and sub-editing stories to ensure they meet the high quality and style ofShepherdess. this function primarily works with the Editor-in-Chief, Deputy Editor, Copy Editor and Freelance Writers. Shepherdessis a social enterprise with the mission of making rural women feel connected through community building, storytelling, and events. The digital project is funded by NZ On Air through the Public Interest Journalism Fund.
This is a contract position until February 2023, estimated at 15-20 hours per week, with rates to be discussed with the prosperous candidate.
COMMISSIONINGEDITOR
PurposeStatement:
To lead the development of stories in our digital journalism project from the research and planning phase through to publishing on our digital platforms; ensuring the robust editorial quality ofShepherdessstories all over.
Job responsibilities:
   » Supporting community engagement on issues that will be explored by the project.
   » Research and planning of stories, including advising on storyangle and balance of the overall collection, with consideration for quality and interest for readers.
   » Conducting pre-interviews with talent to ensure suitcapability of talent, inform the talents of obligations, and gather any preliminary or additional information required to ensure the high quality of content.
   » Writing and editing briefs for photographers and writers, including briefs on scope, angle, areas of interest and deadlines, as well as elements of contention or difficulty.
   » Work with freelance writers and photographers, as needed, to ensure high-quality content that meets deadlines. Where needed, provide emails, phone calls, detailed information as well as an overarching perspective to support contributors in their production of content. If time allows, provide writing support and advice to freelance writers.
   » Writing,rewriting,editingandproofreadingtext:
   » Sub-editing stories to ensure they flow and adhere to Shepherdess's style.
   » Work with writers to give them an opportunity to improve any areas of weakness within their stories.
   » Writingheadlines,standsand imagecaptions as required.
   » Supporting writers to meet deadlines.
   » Managing the copy editing of stories to ensure that all content is copy edited within the specified deadlines and ready for publishing on our digital platforms.
   » Working with our Cultural Partnerships Editor to ensure stories are culturally appropriate and any te reo or te ao M?ori references are accurate.
   » Working with the Project Team to collaboratively deliver on a prosperous project.
   » Inform the Editor-in-Chief of any concerns, problems and/or challenges that may impede the editorial team's capability to provide high-quality copy within the deadlines specified.
   » Keep abreast of the editorial processes and policies acrossShepherdess.
Requirements:
   » Excellentwrittencommunicationexpertise,includingwritingandsub-editing. Creative writing expertise preferable.
   » practice working in editorial in the media (either digital or print) including a head for whatmakes a good story.
   » A team player.
   » Organised and able to meet deadlines.
   » Attention to detail, including excellent standard of grammar and spelling, andcapabilityto adhere to the style guide andeditorial guidelines.
   » capability to be flexible with work hours when peak periods demandit.
   » An consciousness of te ao M?ori and the social and cultural diversity of rural New Zealand.
   » knowledge of our target audience. Must reside in rural or regional NewZealand, or demonstrate an affinity and knowledge for rural or regionalNewZealand.
   » Must be proficient with a computer, including use of Microsoft Office, Asana, Slack and Dropbox.

Commitment:
