About our group and team
Our Employment Relations team works to ensure current and up to date conditions of employment are in place for people working in schools and kura around the country. We are a small but focused team of specialists who work closely with schools, education sector unions, and peak bodies to set conditions and resolve employment relations challenges within the education sector.
About this function
The Principal Adviser, Employment Relations takes a lead function within the Employment Relations team for specified areas of work, and has input into strategy development and planning to ensure the Ministry’s employment relations approach will deliver for learners, support staff, teachers and education leaders is integrated with other Ministry work programmes and is well implemented.
The Principal Adviser, Employment Relations will take a lead function in the development of employment relations and collective employment agreement strategies, policies, and plans, which are focused on the needs of the frontline educators across Aotearoa New Zealand. As a key member of the Employment Relations team, you will undertake and implement bargaining for the education sector collective agreements and pay equity negotiations.
This will involve making a significant contribution to related work programmes, coaching and mentoring of other team members.
You will also be responsible to contribute in quality control of policy and other work through participation in peer review, policy appraisal and discussion issues.
About you
You will have practice working in an employment relation and/or industrial relations in a large and complex organization.
You will also have the following:
   » practice developing and implementing bargaining strategies and plans that encompass a broad spectrum of communications activities
   » The capability to work across a number of workstreams and operate in an ever-changing environment
   » Relationship management expertise – the capability to influence and advise senior leaders, identify key communications issues, and deliver significant services
   » the capability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangata whenuatanga
