E pa ana ki te Kaenga – About the Residence
Our Youth Justice Residences provide a safe, secure and supportive environment where rangatahi in our care can make changes to get their lives back on track. Whakatakapokai is one of five Youth Justice Residences operating across Aotearoa that operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week providing residential placements and programmes for rangatahi aged 13 to 19 years who have been charged with or convicted of an offence. Our vision at Whakatakapokai is to create a unique, culturally focused, therapeutic, safe and restorative care environment that enables rangatahi to strengthen their connection with whanau, hapu, iwi and their culture; and develop the expertise to make positive decisions to support them to flourish and transform their lives, reducing the risk of re-offending.
Mo te tunga – About the function
As a Youth Worker, you will be engaging with and providing professional support to our rangatahi. You will be assisting in the facilitation of care and support to our rangatahi through demonstrating positive behaviours and acknowledging personal influence on the life of our youth.
You will also be working with a collaborative team who is passionate about Oranga Tamariki’s vision, purpose and values. You will be playing a part in building positive cultural and community connection. Whakatakapokai is strongly focused on achieving positive change in rangatahi through education, skill development, vocational programmes, and therapeutic and cultural interventions using a Maori world centric view (Te Ao Maori). Our overall goal is that rangatahi who come into our care are positively integrated back into their community and reduce the risk of re-offending with their mana restored.
The function will involve the following:
   » Regular face to face contact with rangatahi and whanau
   » Maintaining and building stakeholder relationships in the community
   » Mentoring – one on one work with rangatahi, whanau to assist them to achieve their identified goals
   » Supporting rangatahi with their educational aspirations
   » Keeping our rangatahi and whanau connected to their wider whanau, iwi and hapu
   » Flexibility to work in different workplace settings e.g. marae, school or field trips
   » Transporting of rangatahi and whanau to and from activities or appointments
   » Minding – looking after rangatahi
The function of the Youth Worker has a income range of $45,000 – $60,000 (located on practice + penal rates (20% of base income) that applies to rostered hours worked.
Mou – About you
To apply for this function, you must demonstrate the following qualifications and practice:
   » practice caring for or mentoring youth
   » A current, full, clean New Zealand driver’s licence
   » Resilience with the capability to work through pressure situations
   » Strong cultural consciousness and knowledge of Te Ao Maori me ona Tikanga
   » capability to quickly establish relationships with stakeholders and maintain those relationships
   » The right to work in New Zealand
   » capability to work Saturday and Sundays with flexible weekday hours
