About volunteering with VSA VSA is New Zealand’s largest and most practiced volunteering agency working in international development.We provide skilled Kiwi volunteers to support organisations in the Pacific and beyond through capacity building, both in country and virtually. Volunteers must be a NZ citizen or permanent resident. Our Partner Organisation –Department of Health, Autonomous Bougainville Government & Buin Health Centre Buin Health Centre (BHC) serves a population of approximately 80,000 people. Despite there being a stated recurrent budget of K200,000 pa, BHC often receives less than 30% of its allocation each financial year. As a result, the facility relies on user fees (an additional K20,000 pa) and grants to cover operating costs. The ?front-of-house' administration staff of two has responsibility for collecting and user fees, handling petty cash and the procurement and disbursement of non-clinical supplies. The Assignment In this assignment, a VSA volunteer with practice in all aspects of midwifery care could contribute to improving a wide variety of midwifery expertise that are needed by BHC midwifes to take a proactive function in encouraging and educating expectant mothers on the importance of their own health. Empowerment of Midwifes, Nurses and Mothers would assist towards some of the priorities in The Bougainville Plan for Health2012-2030, namely strengthened health systems, an improvement of child survival, an improvement in maternal health and healthier lifestyles.
