Special Education Adviser
   » Two positions available – Hamilton City West and Hamilton City North team

About our group and team
Learning support is a critical part of the Sector Enablement and Support Group in the Ministry. We are charged with leading the education sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education.
Our learning support specialists work closely with families, wh?nau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and M?ori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning results and promote social inclusion.
About this function
The function is located in Hamilton. The day to day work for these positions reside one in the Hamilton City West and the other in the Hamilton City North area of the Waikato District and we are increasing our tele-practice capcapability to enable greater service to the education sector and flexible working arrangements.
As a Special Education Advisor you will play a critical function in our region’s Learning Support team by providing the following:
   » Identifying patterns or contributing factors that may be influencing learning, wellbeing and behaviour
   » Enhancing inclusive practices in early learning services, schools and other educational settings
   » Providing professional support and guidance to schools, teachers and families and building the capacity of those who are best placed to support the learning of children and young people
   » Providing appropriate in-depth specialist assessment and analysis for evidenced informed interventions
   » Working as part of a trans-disciplinary team where a child’s needs are complex
   » The prosperous applicant will have a working knowledge of our current Service Delivery Model, and practice will reflect the six element approach
About you
To be prosperous you will need the following:
   » A significant primary or secondary teaching qualification. A postgraduate qualification would be advantageous equivalent
   » practice working with students with additional needs
   » capability to translate specialist knowledge into practical information
   » capability to co-ordinate service provision in a multi-agency, trans-disciplinary setting
   » Excellent communication and interpersonal expertise and an capability to work effectively with children, young people and their families and teachers across a diverse range of settings.
   » The capability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangatawhenuatanga.
   » availability to engage with tele-practice services in addition to working face to face with services
   » A current driver’s licence as travel is a requirement of the function
