Te Kotahitanga o Ng?ti Whakaue Assets Trust (the Trust) is a charitable trust established as the recipient of the Ng?ti Whakaue portion of accumulated rentals from the Central North Island Forests Land Collective Settlement Act 2008. Since establishment, assets under management have grown from $9 million to $25 million, and the Trust has recorded an average annual return on equity of around 9%, whilst maintaining annual charitable distributions and initiatives for Ng?ti Whakaue wh?nau, hap? and marae.
Set for the next phase of its journey, the Trust has undertaken a review to refresh its strategic focus to deliver enhanced value and impact, through stronger integration of the investment and distribution portfolios. This is an opportunity for a dynamic leader who is excited to support the Board to operationalise the new strategic focus, to build on the strong foundation of innovation and growth that the Trust has established, and to lead and develop the talented operational team.
Te ?hua o te t?runga | The nature of the position
The purpose of the position is to provide organisational leadership abilities and implementation of the overall direction and strategy of the Trust, including:
   » Holding overall responsibility for leading the growth, performance, and evolution of the organisation, and for the delivery of Te Pae Tawhiti (vision), Ng? M?t?pono (guiding principles) me Ng? Pou (goals).
   » Working with the Board to lead the implementation of the strategic direction through Te Mahere Rautaki (the Strategic Plan), you will ensure annual priorities and operational plans are aligned and delivered to.
   » Responsibility for the annual budget, you will maximise earnings from a diverse portfolio to ensure long-term sustaincapability of the organisation, and protection of the capital base. This includes actively seeking out and converting investment opportunities in conformity with Te Whakapuakanga Kaupapa Haumitanga (Statement of Investment Policy & Objectives).
   » Leading the design and implementation of growth and innovation strategies.
   » Assuring compliance and proactively manage organisational risks, by ensuring effective internal controls, business processes and information management systems are in place and reviewed regularly.
A compassionate and commercially astute leader, with the capability to manoeuvre comfortably in complex and politically sensitive environments, you will be:
   » Creating an organisational culture where everyone has a shared sense of purpose, consistent with Ng? M?t?pono.
   » Providing leadership abilities and guidance through effective management and mentoring.
   » Politically savvy, but operating with a political neutrality, and ideally be well networked at the local and regional level.
   » Enhancing partnering and engagement with the Trust's beneficiaries and maintaining and building the Trust's reputation. This will see you developing key strategic alliances, partnerships, and joint venture relationships. You will take the lead developing relationships with iwi commercial entities and key M?ori economy influencers within te rohe o Ng?ti Whakaue and wider (regional/national).
Ng? tino p?kenga me wheako | Essential expertise, expertise and practices
A significant tertiary qualification in a commercial, management, legal, or accounting field is highly desirable but not essential.
Career background, practice, expertise and competencies necessary for application to this position will include:
   » A demonstrated commitment to wh?nau/hap?/iwi/marae, and expertise of te reo me ?na tikanga.
   » An consciousness of iwi/hap? dynamics, and practice in partnering with wh?nau, hap?, iwi.
   » Senior leadership abilities practice, with practice in the development of effective and productive relationships with a governing Board and/or other leadership abilities.
   » Commercially and fiscally astute.
   » Display innovation, enthusiasm, and passion – able to think outside of the box, eager to find new ways to innovate and deliver value to Ng?ti Whakaue.
   » Able to demonstrate the proven capability to work collaboratively to develop and grow relationships proactively, supported by strong communication and interpersonal expertise.
   » Competence in public speaking in both M?ori and non-M?ori environments.
This permanent position is located in Rotorua. Remuneration is positioned to attract a senior level of applicant.
