Our ninth edition has landed, and Shepherdess is going from strength to strength - unearthing stories from across rural Aotearoa through our beautiful print magazine and growing digital channels.
We are pursuing a Cultural Partnerships Editor to join our small but wonderful team spread out across the country. The Cultural Partnerships Editor will be responsible for supporting culturally diverse and diverse editorial in Shepherdess. You will work closely with the editorial team on editorial planning, editing and layout with respect to cultural and diversity considerations. You will also work with M?ori, Pasifika and Asian communities and talent to ensure their practice of working with Shepherdess is positive and well-supported.
You will bring a solid knowledge of te ao M?ori and a familiarity with te reo; excellent written communication expertise and an knowledge of the social and cultural diversity of rural New Zealand. A background in journalism or media would be an advantage, however is not essential.

CULTURAL PARTNERSHIPS EDITOR
Purpose Statement:
To support culturally diverse, and diverse editorial in Shepherdess, through the provision of cultural and diversity advice.
Job responsibilities:
Provide consultation on cultural and diversity considerations to support Shepherdess's values and aspirations in regards to providing positive and empowering representation for all women in Aotearoa, through:
   »
Participating in editorial team planning to provide input on potential culturally diverse stories.
   »
Engaging with M?ori, Pasifika and Asian communities to gather story ideas.
   »
Writing photographer and writer briefs for culturally diverse stories.
   »
Liaising with talent whom are culturally diverse to ensure their practice of working with Shepherdess is positive and well-supported.
   »
Ensure cultural and diverse stories are told in a sensitive manner, including:
   »
Sub-editing stories where talents are culturally diverse, including liaising and supporting our M?ori freelance writers
   »
Reviewing stories wherever te reo is present
   »
Provide advice on imagery selection and layout with respect to cultural and diversity considerations.
   »
Review all culturally diverse and diverse website and social media content prior to publishing to ensure cultural sensitivity.
   »
Supporting the cultural consciousness and capcapability of the editorial and operations teams.
Requirements:
   »
A solid knowledge of te ao M?ori, and a familiarity with te reo.
   »
Excellent written communication expertise, including writing and editing.
   »
Good communication expertise and a team player.
   »
An appreciation of the print publication process, and an capability to work within deadlines.
   »
An knowledge of the social and cultural diversity of rural New Zealand.
   »
knowledge of our target audience. Must reside in rural or regional New Zealand, or demonstrate an affinity and knowledge of rural or regional New Zealand.
   »
Must be proficient with a computer, including use of Asana, Google Documents and Dropbox.
A background in journalism or media would be an advantage.
Commitment:
Contract position. In 2022 we estimate the function will require a commitment of 10 - 15 hours per week, totalling 100 - 150 hours across each edition of the magazine. Rates to be negotiated with the prosperous candidate.
