About our group and team We help coordinate and supervise organisational planning and strategy, and specific priority initiatives. We work with Ministers to support delivery of the Ministry’s work programme. We provide legal advice and facilitate communications and risk management across the organisation to foster public trust and confidence. The Legal Services team where this function is located provides legal advice across the whole range of Ministry of Education responsibilities and services to both frontline and National Office staff. About this function this function will provide expert legal advice across the Employment Relations portfolio and a range of employment legislation including but not limited to the Employment Relations Act 2000 and the Holidays Act 2003. It will provide support to: » the Ministry’s Schools Payroll Programme to ensure schools sector compliance with the Holidays Act 2003, including resolving past non-compliance and ensuring future compliance of the school payroll service » the Ministry’s Pay Equity Programme to enable Information technology to effectively and efficiently administer pay equity claims lodged, and resolve gender located undervaluation in conformity with the pay equity framework and within the pay equity principles » other teams, including People Capcapability, Education Workforce and Employment, Relations. The Senior Solicitor will be expected to work independently, dealing with complex matters, advising on policy, providing continuing and timely advice to management, offering leadership abilities and direction to others, identifying risk and the need for policy and legislative change and contribute proactively About you We’re looking for an practiced employment lawyer, someone who can confidently provide robust and pragmatic advice and is comfortable working with ambiguity. You will also offer the following: » A Tertiary qualification in law and a current practicing certificate » Strong research, investigative, analytical and problem solving expertise » consciousness of risk management and the capability to apply risk analysis to all aspects of legal work » The capability to develop effective working relationships with people from diverse backgrounds » Excellence in oral and written communication, including the capability to present complex issues clearly and concisely » A high level of integrity, self-motivation, flexibility and responsiveness » Sound judgement and the self-confidence to take a stance » The capability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangata whenuatanga. You will be joining a small, high-performing, legal team providing support to the wider Ministry of Education.
