We have new opportunities in our Treaty Negotiations Unit within the Kahui Kaupapa Atawhai Group, whose aim is to develop and advance a cultural platform that connects people with the natural world and integrates Kaupapa M?ori with conservation management.

As a Senior Treaty Negotiation Advisor, your strong policy development and relationship management expertise will be crucial to ensure we deliver high-quality Treaty negotiation and settlement results that align with the Crown Treaty settlement framework and our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. You will be someone who will feel inspired by our shared purpose and values.
Reporting to a Treaty Negotiations Manager, you’ll be responsible for representing Te Papa Atawhai in the Crown’s Treaty of Waitangi settlement negotiations with iwi, advocating for Crown and conservation interests, at meetings with Crown agencies and iwi. You’ll be confident to navigate competing interests and effectively develop negotiations strategies, planning and options, analysing the advantages and risks whilst considering technical and practical practiccapability, and policy ramifications, to formulate sound advice to senior leaders and Ministers.
Te Papa Atawhai supports flexible working arrangements. These are a full-time permanent positions located in Wellington, with sometravel involved.

Ideally you will be an practiced senior advisor who is skilled and practiced with policy development and relationship management, coupled with a good knowledge of the machinery of government and agility to navigate these landscapes. Some practice with negotiation work is highly desirable.
High level analytical and critical thinking capability is key, as is strong communication expertise that will enable you to effectively translate complex policy issues into plain English for lay audiences. Culturally capable, you’ll have a sound knowledge and knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, its principles and implications on society and conservation. practice and confidence in working with wh?nau, hap? and iwi is highly desirable. Your capability to work under pressure, managing competing and short deadlines will round off your profile.
This position would also be appropriate for advisors with transferable practice, who are looking to step into a new challenge and senior advisory function.
