About the Organisation: The heart of the region is the "Smart Little City" of Nelson, and Nelson City Council is the Unitary Authority responsible for providing key infrastructure, community facilities and services, economic development, and a range of regulatory functions including land use and resource management. About this function: The function is a blend of people management and technical planning. The primary focus is the management of the professional team of Planners and the delivery of the significant work plan. The team provides policy advice on a wide variety of resource management issues with housing, freshwater, and coastal hazards a priority. The function also provides strategic, technical, and best practice advice on resource management and policy matters through some technical projects that you will manage. Reporting to the Manager Environmental Planning, you will provide day-to-day leadership abilities and operational management of the Planning Team enabling them to succeed and deliver quality planning projects in a fast-paced work environment. Through exceptional time management and expert organisational, contract, and project management expertise you will manage the delivery of resources, budget, and work, leading and supporting the hybrid Planning team incorporating on-site and remote working arrangements. You will be comfortable and calm working in times of change and uncertainty - both in Local Government reforms and Central Government legislative changes. Resilience, stcapability, and genuine leadership abilities character traits are sought for this key position. Collaboration will be your key mantra, not only engaging and contributing to the Planning team, but also with customers and colleagues to achieve results. Therefore, you will seek out a wider consciousness of the organisation and political dynamics that will affect the Council's direction and may impact the planning function. About you: You will bring exceptional team building, management, and leadership abilities expertise, with a coaching and mentoring style, with interpersonal communication along with sound judgment and problem-solving abilities. You will have demonstrated practice in resource management planning, policy analysis and development and Plan development practice. You will possess a tertiary qualification in Planning or similar, and NZPI membership would be advantageous. this function can flex to suit a Professional Planner that is already operating at this level within a consultancy or within another NZ Council looking to escape to the regions, or a Senior Manager (looking to return to a hands-on technical function with staff management responsibilities), or for an practiced Senior Planning Adviser (ready to step up to a broader focused function), who possesses the mix of technical, leadership abilities and relationship management essential to succeed in this function.
