We have begun a journey towards achieving a better Aotearoa New Zealand with a series of thematic investigations into abuse and neglect that occurred in State and faith-located care settings.
We now have a great opportunity for a Senior Solicitor to provide specialist legal advice and in either Te Whanganui a Tara (Wellington) or T?maki Makaurau (Auckland). Opportunities like this are few and far between – will you join us?
You will lead a team of solicitors on investigations, and assist with legal analysis, drafting, document management, and research.
This isn’t an easy task, but Information technology be compensateing, and bringing personal resilience and self-consciousness, with the capability to balance multiple priorities will put you in good stead to succeed in this function.
We work collaboratively, and we think you’ll enjoy being part of our team as we work to fulfil the Commission’s Terms of Reference. We have a multi-faceted and multi-disciplinary approach, which means that every day you’ll be working not only within your team, with solicitors in other investigations and external counsel assisting, but also with our investigators, report writers, researchers, policy advisor’s and investigation programme leads.
It’s also critical to us that you bring kaupapa, tikanga and reo M?ori approaches to your work and ensure that Te Tiriti o Waitangi underpins what we do. The capability to engage with M?ori and/or Pacific communities will be of the upmost advantage in this function.
Key Job responsibilities:
   » Provide high quality specialist legal advice and support to the Solicitor Assisting, and the Public Hearings and Investigations team, as well as to the Commission and Commissioners as requested
   » Lead a team of solicitors as we undertake investigations
   » Provide, or assist in providing, legal and evidential analysis of topics arising for the Royal Commission under its Terms of Reference
   » Conduct legal research and produce reliable and well-reasoned memoranda
   » Manage and analyse documents, information and Inquiries Act applications received during the inquiry
   » Work effectively with the Solicitor Assisting to provide training and support for other members of the Public Hearingsand Investigations Team as well as Counsel Assisting the Inquiry and the wider staff of the Secretariat
You will bring the folllowing :
   » Five years plus PQE
   » Bachelor of Law Degree required (LLB)
   » Holds a current practising certificate from the New Zealand Law Society or has the capability to obtain a practising certificate quickly
   » capability to apply tikanga M?ori and Te Reo M?ori in practice
   » Demonstrated practice of engagement with M?ori communities and or Pacific Communities
   » Proven capability to draft legal opinions, documents and memoranda; excellent legal research and analytical expertise with high attention to detail. With excellent written and verbal communication expertise
   » Collaborative approach
It is also desirable that you have all or some of the following:
   » Demonstrated consciousness of different kawa and tikanga in a variety of communities
   » Confidence in cultural practices and discapability inclusive approaches
   » Show knowledge that is consistent with Te Tiriti o Waitangi
   » A demonstrated knowledge of trauma informed approaches.

The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the Care of Faith-located Institutions was established in February 2018 and is investigating the abuse and neglect of children, young people and vulnerable adults who were in the care of state and faith-located institutions in New Zealand between 1950 and 1999 and examine ways to stop further abuse.
