Job Description

Help shape the future of education
At Te T?huhu o te M?tauranga – Ministry of Education, we work together to shape an education system that delivers equitable and excellent results.
Our organisation is made up of more than 4,000 talented and committed people around New Zealand, from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures.
While we work in different groups and on different things, we all strive every day to make the biggest difference we can for every child, young person and adult student in our education system.
About us
Te Puna Hanganga, Matihiko – Infrastructure and Digital, a part of Te T?huhu o te M?tauranga – Ministry of Education, creates and supports safe, healthy, inspiring and Digital enabled learning environments. We manage the Crown’s second largest property portfolio of around 2,100 schools with a book value of $23.7 billion and transport over 100,000 students to and from school each day. Our vision for school property is for all schools to have quality learning environments as part of a well-managed and sustainable portfolio that helps deliver equitable and excellent results for every child.
Through Te Puna Hanganga, Matihiko – Infrastructure and Digital, the Ministry is committed to strengthening its asset management capcapability to support achieving our strategy and the Government’s objectives.
About the function: Principal Advisor
For a highly strategic yet visionary thinker, this function presents a rare chance to directly shape and influence the implementation of Te Rautaki Rawa Kura – the School Property Strategy 2030. Working with small, highly capable team and a $23.7 billion asset portfolio, this is a complex, career-defining opportunity where your prowess for asset and investment management advisory will have huge scope to shine – driving continuous improvement, analytical thought leadership abilities and collaboration across multiple stakeholders.
We expect you’ll be in your element here – applying your expert knowledge to ensure policies, funding and operations are aligned and integrated. Ultimately, it’s all pointed toward the goal of prioritised investments and improved asset performance that lead to better education results across New Zealand. As you’d expect this will call for high levels of critical thinking as you champion advice around strategic asset management in the context of school infrastructure. Yet we are also looking to be impressed by your capability to see the bigger picture – to challenge current thinking, factor in future trends, pitch new ideas and provide innovative solutions to driving prosperous results.
We are seeking for
A credible, respected leader in your space, you’ll come to us with an advanced knowledge of strategic asset management, ideally with an appreciation of how this applies to school infrastructure. Your capability to analyse large, complex issues to deliver new insights will be matched by exceptional quantitative expertise and a thorough knowledge of New Zealand’s political, economic, cultural and social structures. Importantly, you’ll need to be a confident, clear and engaging communicator – someone able to build trust and strong relationships with diverse stakeholders.
Are you ready to make a difference?
We need to reflect the diverse communities we serve, so we welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, orientations, and identities. As an organisation, we are committed to building racial equity and excellence in the education sector.
We want to provide flexible working environments where everyone feels significant, valued and supported.
