DIVISION of HEALTH SCIENCES
The Division of Health Science’s M?ori Health Workforce Development Unit (MHWDU) are seeking a dynamic and highly motivated individual to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a frontline function working alongside M?ori health professional programme students at the University of Otago Dunedin campus.
The function/Te mahi
In this function you will work with the team to facilitate the development and delivery of a comprehensive student support and professional development programme for M?ori students studying dentistry, dental technology, medicine, medical laboratory science, oral health, pharmacy and physiotherapy in Dunedin (and connect with students located in Otago’s Christchurch and Wellington campuses).
This is an academic position wherein the candidate will be provided full support and training to develop M?ori-centred and evidence-informed approaches to supporting M?ori student retention, academic excellence and student leadership abilities development. This will include coordinating hui, academic tutorials and workshops for students and requires a proven capability to establish rapport and the skills to foster whakawhanaungatanga/a sense of belonging amongst students. You will work closely with M?ori student executive committees and peak bodies to support students and increase workforce readiness and transition into the health workforce.
Key tasks include:
   » Supporting the MHWDU team to meet strategic and operational education and health workforce development goals.
   » Developing skills to facilitate the prosperous delivery of a comprehensive programme supporting M?ori health professional programmes students working with the MHWDU team and students.
   » Coordinating additional learning opportunities for M?ori health professional programme students including the recruitment of tutors and demonstrators for academic tutorials and clinical skills workshops for some programmes and papers.
   » Supporting the monitoring and management of support programme results data.

Outstanding organisation and communication skills and the capability to work as part of a team are imperative. Data management (tracking and monitoring) and research and programme development are integral components of the function (development in this area will be fully supported). practice working with M?ori and knowledge of tikanga (or a availability to lgain rapidly) are essential. Ideally you will be familiar with the university environment or tertiary sector and eager to lgain more.
You will also have:
   » A significant degree, postgraduate qualification and/or professional skills.
   » Appropriate professional practice in education, learning development, health, M?ori development, governance functions and/or project management.
   » Strong commitment to the advancement of M?ori development.
   » Proven practice working well within a team.
   » Evidence of an capability to work well with students and staff from broad academic and cultural backgrounds and at all levels of the institution.
   » The capability to plan and coordinate events for large groups of people.
   » A good knowledge of executive committee structures, functions and functions.
   » Advanced problem solving and analytic skills, initiative and the capability to plan and meet deadlines.
   » The capability to deal sensitively and in a culturally appropriate manner with M?ori students, wh?nau, communities and organisations

This is a full-time, fixed-term position for 15 months and is located in Dunedin. Flexibility to work after hours and weekends during peak periods is required.
