Job description

Part or full-time possible

We consider ourselves lucky to have a tight knit team of Physicians who enjoy being part of a well-run department, supported by keen RMO's eager to learn, along with great Nurses and Allied Health staff who ensure the ward and patients receive the care and attention they deserve.

Our Physicians have discovered the secret of maintaining an enviable work/life balance by coming to work and live in Timaru.

Our service may be small by many standards, but Information technology is certainly big on teamwork, camaraderie, (including regular after-hours socialising), and clinical challenge in a true generalist sense.

We serve a district population of approximately 50,000 located in a General Hospital Facility, (which has just commenced a significant refurbishment programme), providing our local community with such critical 24/7 services as A&E, ICU/CCU, General, Orthopaedic, and ENT Surgery, O&G, Psychiatry, Paediatrics, Geriatrics, Oncology and Palliative Care, plus of course Internal Medicine.

With a 1:6 weekend On Call roster commitment and regular time scheduled off the ward, (combined with the potential to negotiate to take on the function on a part-time basis if so desired), our team think they have the mix about right.

Currently we are a team of six internal medicine specialist, each of the team having an additional sub-speciality focus, that currently includes Neurology, Respiratory, Diabetes, Gastroenterology, and Cardiology.

This allows for each member of the team to practice, or upskill if needed, in an area of their interest. This we believe adds to job satisfaction, as well as delivering a valuable additional service to the community.

We are keen to expand the range and depth of these services and are looking for people, who in addition to their internal medicine expertise, might like to practice or upskill in the areas of; gastroenterology, endocrinology(diabetes), rheumatology, cardiology, haematology.

Equally if you have an additional interest in Geriatric Medicine, we have opportunities that may suit.

The New Zealand employment environment is very supportive of time for continuing medical education, to allow growth of sub-specialty interests.

And when not working, the opportunities literally on the doorstep for perusing recreational interests, (such as Skiing, Fishing, Sailing, and a host of other pastimes almost too numerous to mention), are second to none. Information technology isn't unusual to hear when people first arrive in Timaru and start experiencing the true lifestyle on offer, the most common reaction is almost one of disbelief that you can have Information technology so good and all so convenient.

Why not practice that for yourself, become re-engaged in your passion for General Medicine while having the personal time and access to a life outside of clinical commitments that allows one to truly relax and enjoy family and friends.

We think you would find that Timaru ticks many boxes (including some you possibly didn't realize you wanted).

You will of course need to be Vocationally Registered (or eligible to become Vocationally Registered) with the Medical Council of NZ in Internal Medicine to be considered for this position.

If you have any questions regarding this function Contact Us by Human Resources by phoning 03 687-2230.

Please be aware, if you are an overseas candidate The Medical Council of New Zealand (the Council) has introduced a new method of primary source verification using the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates' Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (ECFMG's EPIC) service. Being certified through EPIC is now compulsory and we therefore recommend that candidates have registered their professional credentials with EPIC.
