About our group and team The Data and Information Stewardship group (DIS) is responsible for developing and executing policies, practices, procedures and technology to manage the data and information lifecycle to deliver on the needs of data and information for users of the information. The group champions the management of safe and appropriate use of data and information for better decision making. The Data team within the Data and Information Stewardship group is responsible for the Ministry’s data strategy and related data business processes such as the collection, processing, and quality assurance of priority Ministry data. The team proactively manages strategic relationships with data providers, important stakeholders within the data infrastructure landscape and data customers. The team focuses on all elements of data quality, in particular timeliness, completeness, and accuracy of the data . This includes identifying the root cause of data quality issues and covering them at source. The team delivers to agreed deadlines and quality standards for its customers. The team helps identify data gaps with data customers, influences decisions makers and provides guidance and support to other Ministry and education agency staff. About this function The Data Analyst is primarily responsible for covering data needs by acquiring data and information from a variety of sources, validating that data for accuracy, and remedying any inaccuracies. The Data Analyst must problem-solve data integrity issues, communicate well with stakeholders and deliver high quality data to deadlines. About you We’re looking for an Data Analyst who is passionate about using data to help Ministry of Education achieve its goals. As Data Analyst you will be an effective communicator, a conscientious team member who focuses on accuracy and seeing tasks through to completion, with an eye to improving current processes, as well as an capability to manage your own work to meet often tight deadlines. The function would suit someone early in their careers with a background in data analysis. You will enjoy working across the Ministry and external stakeholders to question what they are trying to see from the data. You are motivated to identify the root cause, provide solutions and communicate findings in an understandable way. To be prosperous in the function, you will always follow through on assigned tasks, ask questions when you are unsure and be able to consider the greater picture of the context we are working in and what your work contributes to. You will also offer the following: » significant tertiary qualification, preferably in statistics, mathematics or computer science » practice in a data management focused function. practice manipulating large datasets using SAS, SQL or equivalent would be an advantage » Excellent customer focus, including capability to write clear and concise communications plus good phone etiquette » An capability to identify gaps or quality issues with data and follow through on having them resolved » Competence in the use of Microsoft Office suite » The capability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangatawhenuatanga You’ll be joining a high-performing team where accuracy and completeness of work are paramount, as is enjoying the process of working together.
