Help shape the future of education
At the Ministry of Education, we work together to shape an education system that delivers equitable and excellent results.
Our organisation is made up of more than 3,000 talented and committed people around New Zealand, from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures.
While we work in different groups and on different things, we all strive every day to make the biggest difference we can for every child, young person and adult student in our education system.
About our group and team
The Tertiary Policy Funding and Fees team is one of four tertiary policy teams in the Graduate Achievement, Vocations and Careers group. We work closely with other policy teams, finance and budget teams in the Ministry, the Tertiary Education Commission, and Treasury. We advise on and manage the tertiary funding system processes and fee regulation.
We lead interesting and challenging reviews of various aspects of the system, engage with and consult with sector stakeholders, work on regulation changes, lead funding policy processes, assist others with knowledge and using the funding systems and manage budget initiatives and processes for funding tertiary education.
About this function
You will work across a range of policy areas; contribute to funding and fees policy projects, gain practice in how policy is translated to the sector and become familiar with various mechanisms used by government to invest, regulate fees and manage funding. This may include working on current projects such as preparing advice to support the transition to a new vocational education funding system, and work with the Tertiary Education Commission to support the delivery of government funding to the tertiary sector.
We’re proud of the culture in our policy teams. We appreciate and support each other and develop strong relationships that underpin our capability to deliver good work. If you are driven to influence policy in an education setting, have some policy or related practice, and are keen to work with a great group of people, we’d love to hear from you.
About you
To be prosperous in the function, you’ll be working collaboratively with key internal and external stakeholders on policy changes as well as on issues raised by the tertiary sector. You’ll be communicating your ideas through high quality written advice. We’ll also count on you to contribute to our processes and thinking using a diverse and inclusive approach.
We are seeking to bolster our policy team capcapability. We would like to hear from you if you:
» enjoy working with others to find solutions
» enjoy bringing an eye for detail and translating policy into delivery
» can provide evidence-located analysis and advice to improve the operation and results from tertiary education’s contribution to our society and economy.
There will also be opportunities to lead your own work, gain practice and development in systems thinking, government policy and funding processes that will equip you for a future in policy. You will join a supportive and performance-driven team who will set you up for success.
Previous policy practice, including some grounding in Government processes will be an advantage in this function. For those without government practice, tertiary sector practice may also be considered significant for the function. You should understand the implications of Te Tiriti o Waitangi for our work.
Are you ready to make a difference?
We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds, including Maori, Pacific and those with disabilities, who will enrich our knowledge of the education system.
As a government agency, the Ministry is committed to keeping to the Treaty of Waitangi’s guiding principles in our work for and with Maori students, their whanau, hapu and iwi.
