Job description

Timaru is often considered to be a well-kept secret by those in the know, (well that is what many of our more recent SMO appointees have told us).

It seems our collegially supportive and well run DHB has a tendency to fly under the radar, as we simply get on with the job of providing our patients the best care with the minimum of fuss, and our Mental Health & Addictions Service is no exception.

Our current Psychiatrists have just gained approval to boost their numbers, and hence we now have need of a new addition to our tight team. This person will actively work across our Inpatient, Community, and Addictions teams, to support clients of the service alongside our skilled Nursing and Allied Health staff.

As a trailblazing service (who were instrumental in pioneering the adoption of the Strengths located Recovery Model here in NZ), we need your skills to shine in bringing your clinical skills to our Mental Health and Addictions Service (which is recognized by Government & general public alike, as being a priority need area).

As such we would ideally hope to recruit a Fellow of the Australasian College of Psychiatrists (or equivalent) e.g. FRACP to this function.

We are particularly eager to add fresh insight and youthful perspective to our team which would make the function perfect for a New Graduate who will gain the support and guidance of practiced and forward-thinking colleagues.

In this post you will of course be responsible for conducting outpatient and inpatient work, alongside our multidisciplinary team as well as acute care cover and on call work. Information technology goes without saying that the capability to maintain good working relationships with colleagues from all disciplines is essential.

We may be small in size, but not unlike NZ generally, we have a tendency to punch above our weight in performance measures, plus we hold a solid reputation across our community who values our services.

The sense of community and belonging is reflected in-house as much as Information technology is a part of the local landscape, and what a landscape we have with every sporting and outdoor interest wise almost literally on our doorstep providing genuine ease of access.

And yes, with a 1:4 On Call expectation plus the option of working either part-time (anywhere from 0.8) up to full-time, you will have the time off to be able to take full advantage of the lifestyle on offer. This includes access to great schools, affordable housing and a low crime rate, making Timaru the place for young families who crave a family friendly environment with lots of opportunities.

We welcome an approach from anyone particularly interested in visiting us to see the unit for themselves, or to contact us to discuss the function directly with one of the current team members by calling our Clinical Director on 027 276 4229

But don't take our word for it, come and practice for yourself what the rest of our SMO's already have discovered and value, we think it's a secret worth sharing with the right Specialist. Is that you?

We look forward to receiving your application directly via our careers site.

If you have any questions regarding this function Contact Us by Human Resources by phoning 03 687-2230.

Applications will be accepted until OPEN 2021

Please be aware, if you are an overseas candidate The Medical Council of New Zealand (the Council) has introduced a new method of primary source verification using the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates' Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials(ECFMG's EPIC) service. Being certified through EPIC is now compulsory and we therefore recommend that candidates have registered their professional credentials with EPIC.
