On behalf of the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, due to the upcoming expiry of some terms, Manatu Taonga is seeking candidates who wish to be considered for appointment as a member of the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Board and/or the Maori Heritage Council. Current members whose terms are expiring may be considered for reappointment. Ko wai matou – Who we are Manatu Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage supports Ministers to appoint and maintain effective boards of entities across Aotearoa New Zealand’s art, heritage, broadcasting and sport sectors. This includes appointments to the Board and Maori Heritage Council of Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga. We work to promote aconfident and connected culture and to support more New Zealanders to connect with the culture and heritage of Aotearoa New Zealand. Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga is an autonomous Crown entity established under the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014 (the Act). Information technology recognises and respects the Treaty of Waitangi and its function is to promote the identification, protection, preservation, and conservation of the historical and cultural heritage of New Zealand. Its strategic goals are prioritising and celebrating the most significant places; building support by working with iwi, local authorities, volunteers, owners, members and communities; promoting the vision of Tapuwae to conserve Maori heritage; and prioritising advocacy with a focus on educating, promoting, advising and regulating. The Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Board has eight members, at least three of whom shall have knowledge of te ao Maori and tikanga Maori. The Maori Heritage Council is a Council established under the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014 and has functions under Section 27 of the Act. These include assisting the Board to develop and reflect a bicultural view in the exercise of its powers and functions, ensuring the Board meets the needs of Maori in a culturally sensitive manner and listing wahi tapu, wahi tapu areas, wahi tupuna, and historic places and areas of Maori interest and also assisting iwi to develop programmes to identify and conserve these sites. The Board can delegate some functions to the Council. It has eight members, including four Conjoint members that are also members of the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Board. You will be involved, depending on the make-up of the body, in strategic direction and priorities, developing board/council policies and expectations for management, identifying and managing risks, and monitoring and evaluating the performance of the organisation. In this function, your focus will be to add value and different perspectives to the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Board and/or the Maori Heritage Council. Korero mou – About you Stand-alone Member of the Board. To be prosperous in this function you will have knowledge and practice in one, some or all of the following areas: » Archaeology skills » Governance » Commercial property management » Conservation/restoration; An knowledge of Maori heritage » Other appropriate skills, knowledge, or cultural background significant to Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga » Financial skills » Built heritage skills Stand-alone Member of Maori Heritage Council To be prosperous in this function you will have knowledge and practice in one, some or all of the areas outlined understand-alone Memberabove; and you must be Maori, as required by the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014, and have applicable skills, knowledge, or cultural background for the Council. Conjoint Member to the Board/Maori Heritage Council To be prosperous in this function you will have knowledge and practice in one, some or all of the areas outlined understand-alone Memberabove; and ideally, a comprehensive knowledge of te ao Maori and tikanga Maori.
