About the function
The Ruby on Rails team at the Ministry of Social Development requires additional Senior Full Stack Web Developers, either with technical leadership abilities practice or someone who wants to step up into a leadership abilities function.
You will be involved in a wide variety of development activities - front and back-end coding, code review, user practice and web accessibility.
As a software developer you will be working on a select few of our diverse range of about 20 applications in an agile, fast-paced environment. Some applications are used by a single internal team; others are used externally, by people in partner organisations and by members of the public. All contribute to the work that the Ministry does to support New Zealanders.
We are seeking for Somebody with the following expertise and practice - you’ll have:
   » Previously worked on a range of applications, maybe with different technologies but with a focus on Rails
   » A good knowledge of the key concepts of object-oriented software and can create clean, well factored code
   » Worked with other teams to support and maintain applications and their infrastructure
   » Previous practice coaching and mentoring other developers
   » Been responsible for deploying applications to production and helping the team plan production releases
   » Applied web accessibility and uscapability standards to your user interfaces and be committed to creating an accessible user practice
   » Previously written client-side JavaScript, might have some practice with a client side framework like React, and have worked with CSS frameworks like Bootstrap
   » Worked with Ruby tools like Rake and Bundler, and might have written or maintained gems
   » A good knowledge of how structured data is stored in a relational database and can write complex queries using Active Record and SQL
   » Worked through complex user requirements and developed good relationships with product owners
   » The capability to build relationships with stakeholders with excellent written and verbal communication expertise
   » Reviewed code and can provide well considered feedback

About the Rails team

The Rails development team are a small, tight, high performing crew of about 20 Business Analysts, Test Analysts, Developers and Scrum Leads creating bespoke software within one of New Zealand's largest Information technology departments. We are currently structured into three agile teams and sit within the Improvement, Systems and Technology group at the Ministry of Social Development (MSD). There is a fair amount of bureaucracy around us, but we have a good degree of autonomy within the team. We aim to build high quality applications with a focus on maintaincapability. We use modern software development and devops practices.
We are serious about our work, but at the same time we enjoy the odd coffee and a few laughs.
