Job description:

Job Description

» Lead the Climate Change programme
» Use your excellent engagement expertise
   » Facilitate practical results
Nelson City Council became one of New Zealand's first local authorities to declare a climate emergency in 2019. Council recognises the great threat climate change represents and is committed to the urgent action needed to mitigate and adapt to this challenge.
The need to advance our climate change response has resulted in the development of a Climate Change Business Unit which will set us up for future growth. This presents a new opportunity for a Manager Climate Change to not only lead not only the Climate Change work programme for Nelson City Council but will lead a team currently consisting of two climate change advisers.
You will work with Council agents, elected members and the community on practical results for climate change response, including developing climate resilience, collaborating on climate strategy, agreeing climate change priorities, and communicating Council's actions. You will need good analysis expertise to identify ?quick wins? for Council operations and be able to support teams to implement these.
Does this sound like you?
You are likely to have a significant scientific background combined with excellent programme management, communication, and facilitation expertise. Alternatively you might have a background in climate or environmental policy, with an excellent capability to support others to understand and respond to climate change issues within their areas of responsibility. Regardless of your background, you will be pragmatic and action-oriented, and absolutely committed to supporting the Council to achieve clear results to mitigate and adapt to climate change impacts.
You will already be familiar with the work of agencies (science, government and NGO) and individuals who are active thinkers and researchers monitoring and reporting on climate change. You will have an knowledge of the responsibilities and obligations of the local government sector, and how climate change is likely to affect those responsibilities. You will be able to quickly identify where Council can make an impact, and work effectively with decision makers and technical experts to deliver significant improvements. You will have excellent relationship management, written and verbal communication expertise. In addition, you will thrive in a context which is characterised by diverse and divergent views, strong emotions, and organisational and external ambiguity.
