Our work in the Justice Policy Group is wide-ranging, with opportunities to shape thinking and drive change across the justice and social sectors. Information technology is important and challenging work, with new tests of your critical thinking and relationship management expertise every day.
Our Principal Policy Advisors bring a depth of practice to fulfil a key leadership abilities function within their teams and across the wider Group. They are responsible for supporting capcapability, providing authoritative advice, and leading programmes of work on complex and sensitive issues.
Harm Reduction and Public Safety, Criminal Justice Unit
Within the Justice Policy group, the Criminal Justice Unit provides oversight of the criminal justice system through stewardship of key legislation and leadership abilities on critical domestic and international criminal justice issues.
The Harm Reduction and Public Safety team is focused on keeping New Zealanders safe. We are responsible for a range of policy areas related to potentially harmful activities. Our work includes alcohol, drug, and firearms regulation, family and sexual violence in the law, and aspects of national security and intelligence. We consider which activities should be criminalised and/or regulated, and to what extent. We work to fundamental principles related to human rights, te Tiriti o Waitangi, and rule of law.
We are seeking for a Principal Policy Advisor to join our team. This is a new position and offers the opportunity to shape how the function contributes to both the team and the delivery of our important and interesting programme of work.
He p?kenga tou – expertise and practice
The prosperous candidate will have a significant tertiary qualification or equivalent knowledge, expertise, and practice. A national security clearance is not essential but may be of value.
The prosperous candidate will demonstrate the following traits:
   »Relationship expertise – Strong expertise in engaging diverse internal and external stakeholders, learning from their perspectives as well as influencing them
   »leadership abilities expertise - practice in leading others in significant policy projects and applying a coaching approach to enhance the capcapability of advisors and senior advisors
   »Advisory expertise – broad knowledge of machinery of government and public policy, and capability to anticipate risks and test ideas, analysis, and assumptions in others’ work
   »Communication expertise – Excellent written and oral communication expertise – in particular, the capability to present complex issues in an accessible way and ask questions to improve knowledge
   »Te Ao M?ori – practice in working with iwi and M?ori organisations and designing, applying, and advising on te ao M?ori and te Tiriti-located frameworks for policy

income range: The appointing income for this function will be between $116,741 and $152,450 located on expertise and practice.
