Offer: Milk Harvester/farmhand:Job description:Milk Harvester/farmhandPayment: Accommodation & Paid ($22-25)Job location: Otautau Region: Southland/Fiordland practice: Limited practice Necessary Listing Added: 22/08/2022 We are pursuing a motivated and fit outdoorsy person to join us on our family run dairy farm in Scotts Gap, Otautau to help milk our 600 cows. This is a 2 month placement (September/October) to cover milkings while staff are on an overseas holiday. Some milking practice required, immediate start and shared accommodation provided. You’d be someone who doesn't mind getting their hands dirty, understands the importance of milk quality, and is capable of following our milking procedures efficiently and confidently. Training will be given but some practice cupping cows is necessary. We milk on a 3 in 2 regime which means day one cups on 5am and again 5pm and day 2 is 11am. Average of 30-40 hours/week, paid an hourly rate and a 5 on 2 off roster. General farmwork would also be available if you need more hours and this position could be extended if wanting a longer term placement. Our herd is all autumn calving (Feb/March/April) and we winter milk 680 cows through a 54 bale rotary with ACR, in-shed feeding, automatic drafting and Allflex monitoring collars. Cows are wintered in a compost barn. The closest term to describe our farming style is “regenerative” so a more holistic approach is encouraged to look after our soils, pastures, and animals.
