WHO WE ARE
Stroma is New Zealand's leading new music ensemble and the only professional ensemble in New Zealand dedicated solely to music of today. We are seeking for a driven, capable Ensemble Manager to organise practical operations for three concerts from April to November 2021.
Stroma is a critically acclaimed ensemble that includes some of the most practiced chamber musicians in New Zealand, including leading players from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Information technology is a team that operates at the highest standards of artistic excellence, and We are seeking for an practiced arts administrator or event manager with initiative, integrity and the capability to get things done.
At the core of Stroma's team are the two Artistic Directors, composer Michael Norris (NZSM) and conductor Hamish McKeich (NZSO) who help supervise the day-to-day operations of the ensemble. The Ensemble Manager would contact closely with the Artistic Directors and report to the Stroma Board of Trustees.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are offering a flexible part-time position for an Ensemble Manager, who will plan and organise three concerts during April-November 2021 with support from Stroma's Artistic Directors. The contract amounts to a fixed number of 240 hours, and there is flexibility in how these hours are spread over this period. While the exact working hours can be negotiated with the Artistic Directors, the prosperous candidate must be available during the three peak concert periods of mid-July, mid-to-late August and mid-to-late November. Some evening hours may be required during these times.
Operational tasks will include venue liaison, organising music hire, instrument availcapability and hire, piano tuning, stage management, FOH, technical requirements, facility access, facility set up and pack down, cartage, music stands and all the other details that will make these concerts a success. You will manage a budget for each concert, and ensure players and guest performers are contracted and paid. Other functions may include applying for event funding, liaising with RNZ Concert and the Centre for NZ Music (SOUNZ) for recording and broadcast of the concerts and producing programmes for each event, as time permits.
Stroma works closely with other arts organisations such as Chamber Music New Zealand and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. You will seek opportunities to connect with other arts organisations and grow potential partnerships, while helping meet Stroma's strategic goals.

expertise & Competencies
   » A strong arts organiser, with a proven track record
   » Familiar with the operational aspects of music events
   » Calm under pressure, and able to complete a number of tasks quickly and efficiently
   » A positive communicator and people manager, both face-to-face and in written communications
   » A great ambassador for the ensemble, with high levels of integrity and initiative
   » Computer literate, with practice using Microsoft Excel and, ideally, website content tools such as Joomla
   » Flexible about your working hours during peak concert periods
   » Interested in contemporary (New Zealand) music.
practice
   » practiced in arts administration and/or event coordination, preferably with practice working with orchestral musicians and/or chamber ensembles
   » practiced at organising projects or events, including managing budgets, timelines and competing priorities
   » Connected to existing arts and/or music networks within New Zealand.
The following competencies are also desirable: practice coordinating marketing/comms, including social media; practice using financial/payroll packages, such as Xero; practice with GST accounting/payments; copywriting & proofreading expertise; practice in fundraising in the arts.
