Job description:

Job Description

General Counsel
The Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation is an innovative, award-winning global investor. Our primary function is to manage the NZ Super Fund, an investment fund which invests taxpayer contributions globally to help pre-fund universal superannuation in New Zealand. Our team has a deep sense of purpose through the work we do to benefit future generations of New Zealanders. At the Guardians there's an energy, passion and a shared commitment to excellence. The work is complex, innovative and intellectually stimulating. Our positive work environment respects your wellbeing while supporting your career and your future. As a proud equal opportunity employer we do not discriminate in our hiring practices, diversity and inclusiveness are highly valued.
The Opportunity
The General Counsel is a senior function within the Guardians that leads the legal function and forms a key part of the corporate affairs group. Information technology is a premier in-house function within the New Zealand financial services industry.
The function reports into the GM Corporate Affairs and leads a team of six that provides broad legal advice across the business, including on transactional matters, governance, operations, responsible investment and risk and legislative compliance. The legal team has five critical success factors that centre around provision of trusted, effective advice as an integral part of the Guardians team.
As the Fund grows, the key objectives for the General Counsel include building out the size of the team to further support the organisation, and prioritising workflow between internal resource and external advice. The range of issues that the team sees is broad, very international and complex. This makes the function unique within both the financial services industry and in-house functions generally, requiring a high degree of curiosity and diligence but offering an incredibly intellectually rich environment with a collaborative and well-regarded team.
Key Responsibilities
this function leads the team but is expected to take a hands-on function on certain issues, combining responsibility for partnering with teams across the organisations with setting direction for the function overall. A key part of this will increasingly involve the use of external legal counsel overseas, meaning the General Counsel will be responsible for developing relationships with advisors and managing the performance of those.
It is a true leadership abilities function in the sense that Information technology must support team members who lead many of the component parts, providing strategic oversight and connectivity to enable their work. The function sits on the forum of ?Head of' and executive leaders within the organisation and as such, carries an expectation of working across other teams on strategic issues as an enterprise leader - contributing beyond the legal function alone. The General Counsel is expected to actively participate in internal committees, fora and working groups.
Your Background
As an underlying requirement, candidates for this function should be senior lawyers who bring substantial in-house practice and a significant practising background, likely in financial services, securities law or M&A. Candidates should have broad practice in financial services organisations and within this, exposure to sovereign wealth funds is highly advantageous. Beyond this, the capability to lead, motivate and work with a team of experts is crucial and could come from a leadership abilities function within private practice, or through previous practice leading a legal function as General Counsel.
At the Guardians there is an energy, passion and a shared commitment to excellence. The work is complex, innovative and intellectually stimulating. Our positive work environment respects your wellbeing while supporting your career and your future. As a proud equal opportunity employer, we do not discriminate in our hiring practices; diversity and inclusiveness are highly valued.
