»Australia's oldest continually operating theatre and one of its most beautiful treasures
»Build on our history and the recent redevelopment to take us to the next stage of our evolution
»Wonderful opportunity to be a key contributor to Tasmania's entertainment and cultural resurgence
The Theatre Royal is Australia's oldest working theatre. Noël Coward called Information technology "a dream of a theatre" and Laurence Olivier launched a national appeal for its reconstruction in the 1940s.
In 2012 we celebrated the 175th anniversary of the first performance in 1837. In 2019 we celebrated partial completion of construction of the new Hedberg Centre which allowed for the re-opening of the theatre after two seasons of disruption. At the start of 2020 we had a full year program planned and underway, which was to include the opening of our new state-of-the-art Studio Theatre in April.
Following these events in 2020, which also included construction delays, we are just now welcoming paying audiences to the new Studio Theatre, albeit with some minor work still to be completed. The Studio Theatre, along with other parts of the now substantially completed Hedberg will enhance the audience practice and provide opportunities for practitioners and the entertainment and cultural sectors in our state. This in turn will ensure the on-going vicapability and safeguard the future of the Theatre Royal.
The Hedberg is a $100m development co-locating the Theatre Royal with the University of Tasmania, funded as a unique collaboration between the University, the Australian and Tasmanian Governments, and the Theatre Royal.
Part of the joint vision for the Hedberg is to present a culturally significant performing and creative arts destination that fuels Tasmania's cultural offering in a local and global context.
The opening of the Hedberg and the improvements to the Theatre Royal significantly enhances Hobart's creative precinct which includes the Theatre Royal, Federation Concert Hall and the TSO, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and the University campuses including the Centre for the Arts on Hunter Street and The Media School in Salamanca Square.
As the world and Tasmania slowly re-starts with audiences at full-capacity, the local and national arts sectors are once again producing world-class theatre, dance, music and performances, the Management Board of the Theatre Royal is seeking a new Chief Executive agent to lead the Theatre into its next evolution.
This is an excellent time to be joining the Theatre and a great opportunity to take an already strong organisation to new levels and be a key part of Tasmania's cultural and artistic resurgence.
