Patoa Farms in Hawarden, North Canterbury is seeking people to look after our pigs.
The farm works on a free-farming system which means that breeding stock and piglets live outside all year round. After weaning, pigs are then moved into eco barns (open ended barns) until they are ready for market. We are SPCA and PigCare certified so all candidates must be willing to commit to high standards of animal welfare. We are the largest outdoor pig farm in New Zealand and supply major supermarkets as well as small goods manufacturers and local butcheries.
You must enjoy being outdoors in all-weathers, be able to work independently as well as in a team, not mind getting dirty, enjoy learning new things, like being around animals (not just eating them!) and respect them.
Responsibilities include.
   » Ensuring pigs are healthy and well cared for.
   » Feed, water and bedding monitoring and delivery.
   » Cleaning sheds out, including water blasting, disinfecting and compost removal.
   » Moving of stock within the farm, sorting and loading of stock going off farm.
   » Observation and recording of information relating to pig health, genetics, herd performance and more.
   » Ensuring pigs are handled and able to work safely with farm systems.
   » Managing gestation, delivery, and weaning, assisting sows with nursing and farrowing.
   » Care of sick pigs; medication and vaccination administration.
   » Use of a wide variety of farm machinery, including telehandlers, side by sides, trailers, feed trucks, water blasters, front end loaders, bikes, side by sides and more (all training provided).
   » AI and breeding program tasks.
   » Learning on farm systems and suggesting improvements.
   » Communicating with a wide variety of people.
   » Taking direction from managers and helping others.
   » Sticking to and modelling biosecurity and animal welfare rules.
Minimum stay of 8 weeks, max as per your visa - can help with residency etc in the long run. The pay for this function is dependant on your practice with rates from $21.20 to $29.50 per hour, with time and specialisation higher pay is possible. All training is available on farm for those starting out.  The roster is Monday to Friday plus weekend work is required at least twice a month, but not necessarily both weekend days. We are a farm so you must be prepared to work on statutory holidays. You can expect to work minimum 40 hours a week with start times varying between 5 and 7.30 am depending on the time of year and the team you work in. Maximum days in a row is 9 (unless you choose to take additional hours). All PPE is provided, and full training in our farm systems is given. This is a drive-in position but, we can offer temporary (sole use backpacker cabin, or possibly in home). Accommodation is not included in the pay package.
