Job Description

Science Teacher Mentor – Dept Education – Arawa Secondary School
Change your scene and become a VSA Volunteer and share your practice, expertise, and expertise to transform the lives of many. Work with our partner organisation to create a fair future for all.
VSA will organise and fund, flights, visas, insurance, accommodation, living allowance and utilities while on assignment.
About volunteering with VSA
VSA is New Zealand’s largest and most practiced volunteering agency working in international development. We provide skilled Kiwi volunteers to support organisations in the Pacific and beyond through capacity building, both in country and virtually.
Please note VSA Volunteers must be a NZ citizen or permanent resident.
Our PartnerOrganisation - Dept Education – Arawa Secondary School
The Arawa Secondary School was established in 1975. Information technology is in Arawa town centre, central Bougainville.
The school has a student population of 800 and teaching staff of 38. Information technology is a day school.
The Upper Secondary (grades 11-12) teach the following subject available:
English, Mathematics A, Math’s B, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
History, Economics, Accounting, Business Studies, Geography, Physical Education
The Lower Secondary (grades 9-10) teach the following subjects:
English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Commerce, Home Economics, Business Studies, Religion, Arts, Personal Development.
The school was closed for about 8 years during Bougainville civil war and was reopened in 1997 with the young Bougainvilleans coming back from the bushes in hunger to complete their education.
New classrooms were built upon the foundations of burned down classrooms.

Get off the beaten path to Bougainville! Now being the autonomous region of Bougainville, its rugged landscape is covered in rainforests.
The Assignment
A VSA volunteer science mentor will provide assistance and mentor science teachers or a specific Laboratory Technician to set up Lab Practicals
Although the School scores highly in Science on PNG National Secondary Schools academic rankings, with no functioning school laboratories AHS pupils will not progress in a forever advancing world
The Volunteer
