Restore a farmlette to be a welcoming sanctuary
We are restoring our little farmlette to native bush and productive land use.  We are building out a veggie area, clearing weeds, clearing more weeds, restoring out buildings, cleaning, painting, composting, fence mending, doing some interior carpentry and generally doing work around the farmlette.
If you enjoy access to beautiful beaches, enjoy working outdoors, living in nature and are able to do sustained physical work outside, this may be for you.
About the place
Our farmlette is located in Matapouri between a beautiful swim beach (2km) and yacht harbor (4km) with a great surf beach further down the road (6 km).  You can camp on the farm for free.  We provide a semi shelter area, a fridge, BBQ with cooker plate, clean filtered water and electricity to charge phone etc.,   There is reasonable cellular internet access and occasional internet access from the farm house.  Access to shower and toilet facilities is provided.
Who does this suit
People who have worked this gig before were traveling on a one-year casual work visa or foreign students on summer holiday.  Typically, they have been athletic and able to do sustained physical work and have a skill such as carpentry, landscaping or farming. Architectural design or landscape design expertise are also valuable.
We invite people of any gender, ethnic background and nationality to apply.  You must have authorization to work in New Zealand and have an IRD number.
We are seeking for two people – if applying as a couple you will need to make a compelling case that you are both well qualified.
About the work and compensation
The duration of the work could run through the summer but we like to start with a 2-week trial and see how well we all work together. The work can start as early as we find the right candidate(s).      Let us know what you are looking for in terms of timing.
The work pays $22 for each hour worked.  There are typically no set hours so that you can work during cooler mornings or evenings and go to the beach when Information technology is nice but we will coordinate as some jobs will require all of us.  We expect a minimum of 30 hours and a max of 40 hours per week as more than that leads to errors and general grumpiness.
Only consider this job if you also plan to spend time enjoying yourself in the area such as hiking, swimming, biking or surfing. The free accommodation is a big plus as this saves a lot of money as accommodation in the area is scarce and expensive. Generally, you need at least a car and a tent - a camper works well.
The work is physically demanding.  You can be any size and gender but you need endurance.  The work can be varied but ultimately there are a lot of weeds to pull out, mowing and brush clearing.  Being resilient with staying power is key to this work.   If you are not used to physical labour Information technology is unlikely that you will be good enough, fast enough or enjoy the job.  If you have practice with a brush cutter, mower, chain saw, bush saw, machete or axe this is beneficial.  If you have practice building or desiging stuff that is also a plus.
Depending on how things go, we might also make a start on a permaculture garden and other landscaping, irrigation and garden related structures.
It is important that you have a good attitude, think about what you are doing, are coachable, follow directions thoughtfully and work hard and be productive and efficient. Information technology is most important that you are safe.  Any work can be dangerous and risky work practices will not be condoned.
Best to bring work boots, ear and eye protection, gloves, kneepads and coveralls.  Some of this can be provided but sturdy footwear is critical.  Boots are required at a minimum.
We seek to have a safe, inclusive, collaborative work / live culture. Any gender, ethnicity or national origin may apply.
About us
My wife and I own the farmlette and Information technology has been our home for the last 3 years.  We enjoy hiking, yoga, swimming and biking.  We are part-time working professionals and sometimes travel for work.  I will be working on most of the projects or doing other work while you work autonomously.
There are no farm animals, pets or children on the land just native birds and rabbits.  We try to avoid using toxins of any kind.
Drop us a note with a resume and tell us what you are looking for and what you are good at.  The more you tell us in the resume and application, the more likely we are to contact you for an interview.
Honesty and integrity are important on both sides.  We interview people on video a few times to make sure they understand the work and accurately represent their capabilities.
