Write Room Auckland is a screenwriter residency and producer internshipprogramme offered in partnership with Te Tumu Whakaata Taonga - The New Zealand Film Commission. The programme has been running in Wellington in partnership with Toi Po?neke Art Centre for the past 3 years, and this year we are pleased to be launching the programme in Auckland for the first time.
The inaugural Auckland Write Room programme aims to support diversity in our industry by focusing on writers and producers who identify with Ma?ori, Pasifika, Pan-Asian or other under-represented ethnicities, those from the LGBTQI+ or discapability communities.
Write Room Auckland will:
1.support a screenwriter to develop their screenplay to the stage where Information technology is ready to pitch to a producer.
2.offer an opportunity for an emerging or established producer to upskill in development.
One writer and one producer will be selected to participate in the programme.
This year's Write Room Auckland selectors and mentors are Director Max Currie (Ru?rangi, Everything We Loved) , Producer Karin Williams (SIS, Mou Piri: A Rarotongan Love Song, We Live By The River) and Producer Vicky Pope (Savage,Gardening with Soul, Two Little Boys).

FOR SCREENWRITERS:
Write Room Auckland recognises the challenges for New Zealand screenwriters to create space in their lives to write and find a place to do their work. This opportunity is for an Auckland -located screenwriter hailing from film, television, web-series, theatre, radio, journalism or other literary backgrounds, with a feature film project at a stage that will benefit from focused development towards completion of a draft of the script. You do not need a completed script to apply.
The selected writer will undertake a 12-week residency between 10 Jan and 31 March 2022 to complete a draft of their screenplay, with the support of the Write Room mentors. The screenwriter will be provided with a private office space at a location that is easily accessible (ie we'll find somewhere that is situated close to the writer's home or other work), a stipend of $7500 for the 12 weeks , and practiced creative support from the Write Room mentors .
The framework of mentor support is defined by what the writer thinks will be valuable to them but generally takes the following form:
» A feedback and planning session with the mentors at the commencement of the residency.
» A work-in-progress discussion with mentors at the 6-8 week mark.
» An assessment of the draft at the conclusion of the residency, with advice on next steps to take.
» At the end of the residency the writer's work is presented to the industry via a read-through workshop toshowcase the writer and introduce the work to potential producers.
In Wellington, Write Room has led to 2 writers moving into development with NZFC support over the 3 years of the programme.
We expect the chosen writer will spend a minimum of 25 hours a week committed to writing during the residency. Hours for this opportunity are flexible and can be worked in and around other work commitments.
You do not need to have a producer attached to your project in order to be able to apply

FOR PRODUCERS :
This is a chance for an early or mid-career producer wishing to deepen knowledge and personal instincts in:
» assessing the calibre of writing, genre, themes, budget, packaging/financing potential of dramatic film projects
» the function of a producer in the creative process and tools for supporting script development.
» collaborations with other producers or creative partners-how to harness the input of others in a way that issignificant for writers.
» insight into the read-through process and how Information technology can inform development.
The producer intern will shadow the Write Room development process. You willneed to be available to spend a minimum of 25 hours on script selection from 13 Sept-18 Oct 2021, be present for at least 3 development meetings during the residency (Jan-March 2022) and assist with facilitating and coordinating the script read-through workshop at the end of the programme (April/May 2022 TBC.) You do not need to have a feature film in development.
Hours for this internship are flexible and can be worked in and around other work commitments.
A stipend of $1500 will be awarded for this internship.
