Job Description

The opportunity
To help us better understand our future students, the Faculty of Engineering plans to facilitate a focus group with high school teachers from year 9 and 10. As a result, we are hiring two part-time Qualitative Researchers with practice in planning, facilitating and analysing focus groups to generate actionable insights that will help shape significant changes to STEM communication and promotion.
Purpose / Job Description
This research aims to gather insights from the high school maths and physics teachers to gain a better knowledge on the:
(1) Barriers that may be hindering students to take up maths and physics in Year 11.
(2) How the Faculty of Engineering may be able to better support and create solutions that can help and encourage more STEM/ Engineering participation across year 9 and 10.

   » Designing the structure, questions and required preparations for the focus group
   » Facilitating the focus group
   » Report and presentation on the insights and recommendation
Hours and Remuneration
The total project hours will be determined together with the prosperous candidates at an hourly rate of $23/ hour.
Should the focus group be unable to proceed due to impacts of COVID-19, you will be remunerated for the hours spent for deliverable (1).
Projected deliverables and timelines
   » Facilitator recruitment & selection: week commencing 10 January 2022
   » The selected candidate (researcher) must be available on the focus group day: 17 February, 5-9pm.
   » Total project hours are approximately 20 hours/ researcher, flexible across a 3 weeks period. This will be determined jointly with the researcher.
Focus group participant recruitment will be conducted by the Faculty of Engineering
About you
Our ideal candidate for this function will be proficient in a range of qualitative research methodologies. This position will be a self-starter and lead this project autonomously with support by the Faculty of Engineering marketing team and Women in Engineering team.
Interview process
Interested candidates will be shortlisted located on their practice with qualitative research followed by a 30-minute meeting to understand the proposed research methodology, hours and availcapability.
The candidate(s) with a proposal that best meet the requirements of this study will be employed on a casual contract within the Faculty of Engineering.
