About our group and team
Learning Support is a critical part of the Sector Enablement and Support Group in the Ministry. We are charged with leading the education sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education.
Our Learning Support specialists work closely with families, whanau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and Maori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning results and promote social inclusion.
About this function
As a Kaitakawaenga you will play a critical function in our region’s Learning Support team by:
   » working proactively with Maori tamariki, mokopuna and their whanau, hapu and iwi, educators and Learning Support colleagues to identify and eliminate barriers to access to learning support services for Maori students with learning support needs
   » working with and alongside adults to develop appropriate communications, consultation and co-operation to promote a well-learning lifestyle for tamariki and rangatahi Maori requiring additional quality supports across all education settings
   » covering key results for whanau in key plan meetings with educators, Ministry specialist staff and agencies
   » integrating Te Ao Maori with subject matter experts to endorse and strengthen cultural solutions for the learner and whanau
   » working effectively as part of a team.
About you
To be prosperous you will need the following:
   » A significant diploma qualification (minimum two years study) or higher
   » Te Reo me ona tikanga, capability to build trusting relationships, communication and lived practice
   » At least three years teaching te reo Maori or three years working in the community in Maori development
   » Have a high level of competence and fluency in Te Reo Maori me ona tikanga and be able to link this skills to work alongside colleagues and specialists in a bi-cultural way
   » capability to work effectively in Maori settings including the auraki education system and Maori education from kohanga reo, kura kaupapa, wharekura and whare wananga
