AUT’sSchool of Scienceis a culturally diverse school with excellent teaching and research disciplines and facilities. We keep our class sizes small and our staff are passionate about both research and teaching, committed to student success, and widely published internationally across a broad range of disciplines. We have a duty to reverse the current inequities in the science talent pipeline, and critical to this is increasing our M?ori and Pacific academic staff to support the development and delivery of more diverse teaching and learning across subject areas within the School, and the modelling of educational and career pathways for our M?ori and Pacific students.
The function
This is a great permanent, full-time opportunity to become a Lecturer and develop your career in teaching, research and service, whilst having the support ofEke Tangaroa – AUT’s M?ori and Pacific Early Career Academic Programme. The prosperous appointee will be located at our City Campus and ideally be able to commence their new function 28 June 2021 (in time for the start of Semester Two – 12 July).
OurSchool of Scienceis seeking a M?ori or Pacific scholar with skills within any of the following discipline areas:
Chemistry,Food Science,Biomedical Science, Molecular Genetics,Pharmacy/Pharmacology, a discipline withinMedical Laboratory Science,Microbiology,Ecology,Environmental Science,Geographic Information Systems Science,Geology,Marine Biology,Aquacultureand/or Kaupapa M?ori research in any of the above scientific disciplines.
Lecturers teach across programmes as agreed with the significant Head of Department; we embrace practice-led, and research-informed, approaches to teaching where the student practice is optimised. You will also publish actively in your specialised field; research is well supported within the School. You will be supported to seek external research funding, engage with government, business, the professions and/or the community, and contribute to School/Faculty activities.
You will join an open and highly collaborative group that supports the growth of its people. Our staff has a wide variety of skills and reputable research profiles, and our research is often multidisciplinary and problem-solving focused. We have senior academics with excellent track records in research and securing external funds/contract. We have active and vibrant research groups in various disciplines who will welcome new skills and practice a new appointee would bring. Te Reo Research, a kaupapa M?ori framework for biomedical, bioheritage, biotechnology and other research programmes that involve native taonga species is also within the School and is led and directed by a senior M?ori academic. We have a wide variety of engagement with the industry and government organisations in all our four disciplines of science. These include MBIE, MPI, DOC, pharma companies, DHBs, crown institutes, and many more.

We welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates of M?ori or Pacific genealogical descent. Please submit your full CV, along with a cover letter that outlines your interest and potential suitcapability for this function. Key criteriaas follows:
Qualification/practice:
   » A PhD/Doctorate in a discipline or specialisation significant to our School of Science.
   » PhD/Doctoral graduation must have been within 3 years of application to this programme. Alternatively, current PhD/Doctoral students will have submitted their completed thesis for examination before starting their function.
Research and Teaching Interests:
   » Ideally within any of the following disciplines: Chemistry, Food Science, Biomedical Science, Molecular Genetics, Pharmacy/Pharmacology, a discipline within Medical Laboratory Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, Microbiology, Geographic Information Systems Science, Geology, Marine Biology, Aquaculture and/or Kaupapa M?ori research in any of the above scientific disciplines.
Previous academic employment:
   » This must be your first full-time, permanent academic position in either a university or other tertiary education provider. You must also have no more than 5 years fixed-term contract academic practice (in total) in a university or other tertiary education provider.
Start Date: You will ideally start by 28 June 2021. Interviews will take place end of May/start of June, appointments are then expected to be confirmed mid-June.
