Are you an out of the box, innovative thinker who loves caring for art collections and connecting them to their community? If so, this is the opportunity for you! This exciting function will be located at He Waka Tuia, our collaborative exhibition space with the Southland Museum and Art Gallery (SMAG). Working alongside our Public Programming/Social History Curator, the Arts Curator will plan and implement an exhibition calendar that balances the rich art and artefact collections of IPAG, SMAG and the Southland Art Foundation. As such, a key interest and knowledge of the art scene, both in Murihiku and nationally, is essential to this function. In addition, the Arts Curator will be a proven researcher who is skilled at finding the missing pieces and can add further layers of provenance to our broad collection. Being a keen writer, they will play an integral function in the development of easily digestible exhibition text and interpretation for a variety of different audiences. A key part of this multi-faceted function is communication, and the ideal candidate must be able to articulate themselves clearly and confidently through both written and spoken word. Working as part of a small and dynamic team, the ideal candidate must have a broad range of art gallery / museum practice. No two days will be the same and we require a well-rounded person who is as comfortable packing and transporting art works as they are working up a ladder installing exhibitions or preparing collection related paperwork. A background in graphic design would be extremely advantageous. Our ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of tikanga M?ori and how the Te Tiriti o Waitangi relates to museum and gallery practise in Aotearoa.
